An idiot eh...I don't like to judge people, but you know yourself better than I.

Hmm, I must be mistaken, but deer travel the same routes over and over because it is the EASIEST (I suppose that could mean they are lazy), deer also cross at whatever dips or lowest point they can find in the fence because they don't want put forth the effort of jumping over the higher sections to which they are pefectly capable (I don't know, I am starting to see a trend). Unless pushed by humans or chasing pud during the rut, they sleep and graze like cattle.

Maybe up in the northeast the deer run laps around the section to keep in shape....

Do you two not know the meaning of MOST or GENERALLY, try looking that up in your trusty dictionary and throw some synonyms my way.

Jennings-compound...68 lbs.
Gold Tip arrows
Thunderhead or Wasp 3-blade broadheads (100 gr)

It makes a difference what type of hunting you are talking about...
Whitetails from a treestand in my home state of Iowa...average is around 20 yards...with my longest shot taken being 33 yards

Just got done with a 2 week hunt in Arizona for Javilina and Coues deer (Whitetail to folks in Arizona)....shot a huge boar javilina at 48 yards from my Double Bull blind over a water hole (only traveled 20 yards)
...also missed 2 whitetails at 45 and 50 yards<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>...and felt lucky to get a chance at that distance.
In the 6 years I have hunted in Arizona, average shot distance is around 40 yards...you are not going to get as close to those deer as you can to a deer up north hunting from a treestand.

If I had a range finder, or stakes and I practiced everyday like a did for one summer at 70 metres, I would take a 40 yard shot at the most, If I was going to strech it or lost my head, maybe 55metres. But I think the closer you are to an animal, the less mistakes can go wrong , and you can pick better spots to shoot. from 5-20-25metres. I don't think long shots are unethical, it depends on the experience of the hunter, and how well your equipment and yourself is tuned.
Good shooting.

2001 high country brute force, 294 fps 28 3/4 draw at 70#. i use goldtips 55/75 cut at 28.5 inches with 85 gr. nap spitfies. tru glow lite sight with one 0-30 yard tritium pin, tm hunter rest. killed 4 deer 3 at 10 to 12 yards and 1 at about 20 yards. shot another at 30 yards that i couldn't find. i practice mainly at 40 yards because it makes everything under that seem easy. longest shot would be 40 yards. i watched 3 bucks all at 50 yards for 30 minutes 1 was a nice 9 point. i grunted at them several times to no avail. one of my kills was a nice 8 point, all this happened in oct/nov 2001.

RE: Shot distance poll

Compound- Avg distance is about 13-15 yards for all shots taken

I've taken only 2 deer over 30 yards.....one at 33, the other at 40.
My honest max effective distance if the conditions are right is probably 40 yards, but I need some good indications that I'm shooting at a very relaxed and stationary target at that range. I really start to feel comfortable at 30 yards......comfortable that less can go wrong with the animal moving.
I practice routinely back to 80-90yards.....do that for a session and move into 40. It looks and feels like 20.

PSE Firestorm, set at 70#. My max distance at an animal is 40 yds. The comfort level increases as they get closer as Matt/PA said. This is due to the animals ability to move and my ability to not see things between me and an animal that is farther away than 40. I shoot amywhere from 80 yds and closer in my yard, and can keep them in the kill zone of the 3-D Deer. that doesn't make it a shot I would take at a living animal. Sorry, I have to much respect for them to be launching arrows that may not hit thier mark. Longest shot I have ever taken on an animal is 35 yards at a Fox, Closest I have ever passed, is 10 yards on a wolf.

I shoot a compound bow, a different one every year, but all shoot around 285fps/with carbons and 125gr. thunderheads.
Average shot=15-17yds.
longest=50yds.(exactly)
over 60 deer taken...and that is an accurate average. I like `em close.

I live just south of Des Moines. I've never spent much time in western Iowa...have hunted my whole life in south-central and SE Iowa. I do know some really nice bucks come out of the Loess Hills area though.

I've been hunting in the desert the past 2 weeks so I haven't been on the board...Welcome aboard.. Nice to have someone with Iowa roots around!

You're right Shane, they have had a few whoppers come out of those hills, several record setters. I've gotten close to one of those bad boys, when I was very young...probably 14 or so. I remember counting 16 full points on him, but was so damn scared I couldn't draw on him since I was on the groud at eye level!!! You know how kids are, that thing might as well been 7 x 7 bull elk as big as he looked to my little punk butt!

I may actually be heading to Indianola this year for shotgun season, my buddy who lives there has taken two VERY nice bucks the last couple years. Granted I think they do the 'small town push' with 30 fellas and about 5 posting at the other end!

Good to hear back from ya...any luck in the desert?

What's your friend's name? I'm currently at my bowhunting partner's home in San Diego, he and I grew up together in Indianola...good chance we know your friend if he has lived there for any length of time. We bowhunt only...not a big fan of our &quot;party hunting&quot; shotgun season back home...not alot of work involved when 25 guys surround a patch of timber...but that's another story. If you are able to come...best of luck! You don't seem like the type to be involved in that type of hunting.

Our Arizona trip went great. We filled tags with 2 deer and 2 javilina. My buddy shot a P&Y coues buck and I shot a 60 lb. boar...both over water holes. We used our Double Bull blinds with army surplus 3-D material thrown over the top... Those Arizona whitetails are about 10x tougher to hunt than our Iowa deer and about the size of our fawns!

RE: Shot distance poll

I have never shot an uninjured deer over 35 yards but I did put an arrow in one I already shot when it stopped at 52 yards and I was anxious for it to go down. I was unsure of my 12 yard shot since it was my first buck with a bow. I like to have them about 15-23 yards for perfect shots. Closer is tough to get drawn and shoot at that angle and farther starts letting Murphy hunt with you.

I practice constantly at 50yd with my hunting rig.
My own personal limit is 30yds on a live animal while hunting.
The longest shot I have taken to date is 18yds. Most of my archery kills have been inside 10yds.
