For what its worth, I never played pro ball, but had my fair share of highschool. After highschool I started servicing and installing safes and vaults. I carried them like I was superman for about 10 years. Finally when taking my boat off the hitch I heard a pop and was down on the ground crying like a baby. Had to renta wheelchair just to get to the neurosurgeon. 24 hrs laterI had my MRI and 24 hrs after that I was in surgery. Crushed my L4-L5 vertebrae years ago and the disc material simply kept herniating. Turns out that the disc above and below are degenerating so they fused the L-4 L-5 together with titanium rods and screws. 3 more years later they wanted to fuse the one below and the one above. I wason oxycontin, morphine, valium, etc. for the three years between the first surgery and the dr told me that if I had this surgery it would be 5 more years before another was needed. If I kep taking the meds orally my organs would no doubt seize up like an alcoholic.
I chose to have a dilaudid pump surgically installed in my abdomen. Now I get a constant drip with a double dose at night for sleep. At least I dont have to take any pills and the meds go directly into my spinal chord. This is a blessing to my liver and organs. I feel no pain and Im climbing trees and hiking with a pack on my back for miles. I dont even know I have the issues in my spine until I rest or lay down. I know what you mean by the morphine drip, but modern technology can implant the pump and run it into your spine to reduce addiction, and it uses 100/th of the medicine. I have about 5 more years until they change the battery so I figured I would have the neccessary surgery then.
Keep your chin up. There are many of us doing the normal with alternative meds. I take valium by mouth, and thats it. Might want to talk to pain management dr to find alternate ways to medicate if the pain is that bad.
Best of luck!

While I don't know the amount of impacts you suffered in the NFL, I played right gaurd in highschool . I know it is one of the most physical positions in the sport. I am truly sorry for your troubles and hope you recover completely and quickly. Who did you play for ? If you don't mind me asking.

BigJohn,
I just saw this thread dont know how I missed it. I hope things are coming along better now. Its amazing how we all take little things for granted until something happens. You take care of yourself so you and your family can go camping again. You need to be there for them. Good luck to a speedy recovery. And since you cant get out hunting just go out and buy a hunting game for the computer......anyway to get "into" woods will help ease the mind.....lol
