Double Whammy

Last night didn't see a thing. The acorns are all but gone and I was beginning to think that I might not even get a chance to fill a tag in CT. These tree rats were making a lot of noise just before dark when this doe snuck in behind me. By the time I saw it, it was walking thru a shooting lane and was a few steps away from me not having a shot opportunity. It was on the small side, but I have a bunch of tags and no meat in the freezer so I let one fly. She mule kicked and took off. I gave it an hour then took up the trail. I was using Rage 2 blades for the first time and was dissapointed at the spotty blood trail. The arrow was covered with dark red blood, I found some spots of bright pink blood and some dark ones. At 10 PM I was beat and the trail wore very thin. I decided to call it a night and come back in the morning, even tho its an hour ride.

On my way back this morning, it looked like it might rain. I figured that would be just my luck, but the rain held off. The temps were in the high 30s last night, so I figured if the coyotes didnt get it, I'd have a good chance of finding it and the meat should be good. Well, I got there and took a quick look for the next drop of blood, then decided to just scan around with my binos. Saw it piled up maybe 15 yards from where I found last blood the night before. Well, whammy #1: It turned out to be a button buck. Whammy #2, for some reason this deer was pretty stinky. My shot hit far back on a quartering away shot. It was good though, going in high and coming out low behind the opposite shoulder. It sliced thru liver and lungs. I would have thought that with the temps low it would be fine, but im not sure that the meat is still good. Its hanging in a friends cooler now. I'm hoping its still good to eat?
