RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was in the stand, all set up by 5:30. Sat in the dark till sun came up. Was gonna sit all day but all I saw, all morning, was a feral cat so I got down at 11 and went to work. Im in 3r. What did you guys see/get?
|
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw 1 deer at 5:45. It snuck up on me. At first I thought it was a squirrel but then out of the corner of my eye I saw the deer. It was still a little dark anyway. I couldn't tell if it was a buck or a doe. As soon as I tried to pick up my bow it bolted. Then I just got to cold, I didn't dress warm enough for 25 degrees this morning

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I struck out this morning too. I only saw 1 very early this morning but never did see what it was other than it was a deer.

ORIGINAL: V8Ranger Hey what happen to Tony? I haven't seen him posting. Did he go away for a weekend hunt? 8:50 - see my first deer .... it is on top of ridge by the edge of the field and it is startled .... from what, I don't know 9:00 - receive text from brother, "Adam hit a 6 pointer" Adam is my nephew who has gun hunted before, but decided totry bowhunting ...the kid is a sniper with a gun ..... the phrase that worried me was, "hit" 9:15 - text stating heis watching the buck who stopped 75 yards away after the shot .... my response was, "Uhoh" 9:30 - text staing they just lost sight of buck ...gonna wait till 10 to check the arra 10:00 - They got the arrow ... has an odor ... very little blood on it .... kid of slimy... I instruct all to wait to track until late afternoon 12:00 noon - Feeling guilty that I wanted to hunt my area (across the street, mile back) the whole day and not help them with the buck, I hiked back to the truck and waited with them. 1:00pm - we take off to track the buck ..... upon further inspection of the arra, the "gut" odor isn't gut odor ... they watched the buck for a half an hour after the shot....the only blood we found was in the area they saw the buck go, except for when he crawled under a fence .... very little blood in all ,,,nephew is returning tomorrow to keep searchin, but I think the buck is gonna make it ....IMO, it was a flesh wound ...all white hair ... no gut in the blood..... arrow doesnt have but a little blood on it... 3:30 - back in different stand 3:40 - Dang!! look at all these squirrels!! 5:30 - phone call from other nephew ..., "I just nailed a doe!!" I get out of myother spot (1/2 mile behind the house) during prime time He hfound the arrow with the broadhead and 2" of arrow gone...I asked him what it sounded like when it hit her, he said, "CRACK"! I told him he hit the "knuckle" in the shoulder .... we searched for her .....ZERO blood ....my nephews are going back tomorrow at light to see if there is anything So that pretty much sums up my crappy 1st day  Can't hunt on Sunday's with my church responsibilities .....so after school affords opportunity for night hunts ..... we shall see .... Just got a text from NY/AL ....DOE DOWN!!! |
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys, well i was only able to hunt saturday because everyone around me got sick. My only action was Sat. morning,8 o clock i saw a spike (cant shoot pilot restriction) than 9 o clock i saw a 4 pointer 10 yards out infront of me( cant shoot)...
Than 9:05 i had a flock of 30 turkey marching right under my stand to go in the feild. after not being able to move for 15 minz,i slowly started to inch up, they spooked but i was able to get a 30 yard shot off on a perfect eating size hen, She was instantly dead.... This was my first ever bow kill and my first ever turkey, Im so happy!!! Sat night just a cupple does running in the feild thats it. No big bucks seen, so i blame the moon... |
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good opening day all in all in 3s. Doe and 2 fawns came by at 6:45 out of bow range headed towards my buddies stand. 7:00 I hear a crack and then a phone call from him saying he got the doe. 7:20 here come the fawns again. Normally I wouldn't shoot one with spots but I have an obligation at this spot to remove deer so I killed the bigger of the 2. Smallest fawn for this time of year I have ever seen, couldn't have been more than 20lbs on the hoof. Plus the whole morning I had another doe hanging around and a tall racked 7, a 6, and a 4.

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well that bits Tony. Way to go on that turkey. I am trying to under stand why there is an obligation to shoot a Fawn. I didn't see anything last night. I went out this morning and only saw 1 doe on the ridge about 100 yards away. I tried to call her in but she never broke stride as to where she was moseying to. I will go back out this after noon and see what happens. But so far not much movement at all. The moon needs to go away. From what I can find it looks like the moon will be gone in about8 to 10days. Then the nights will be dark. The rut would be nice to but I think thats still a few weeks away. At least it will be cold all week at night.

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The obligation is that it is a deer management area in a area that is heavily populated with deer. Does are the main objective but fawns of unknown sex are counted as does in the sense that if harvested it would be one less deer for the area to sustain and one less deer to bear offspring next year. Hope this helps in your understanding.

I agree with what you said about the moon, its made day movement go down ALOT. One thing i have noticed is last week and beyond all the bucks where in groups, the last few days till now they are all by them selves, anyone else noticing this? |
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok loo. Just didn't know why anyone would shoot a fawn, but if thats the case, totally understandable.
I haven't seen a buck yet to know if they are by them selves. There are 2, 6 or 8 points, that have beenrunning around my house all summer. I have one of themon my trail cam and the other one at this point is M.I.A. other than them I also have 2 spikes on my cam at the same time, and just one of them. Soif I had to guess I would say they split up.The spikes I will let walk, but if I'm still deerless on the last 2 days of the season, I'm not eating tag soup. If they show up,one of them is getting an arrow. :D |
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A little more action today, saw 2 sets of does and fawns w/ one bedding 15 yds broadside but I opted to just watch them since I figured the deer were moving and a buck was a possibility.
Also saw a nice black bear at 20yds giving me a perfect broadside shot. Unfortunately I was in 3r w/ no open season for bears...yet. Still no bucks though but some must be moving cause my taxidermist friend got a few in already and a guy had a nice one in his truck in the CVS parking lot last night. As the moon goes away we should get a little more buck movement. |
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking good for us WNY'ers, massive cold front today with it being damn cold tomorrow, I know i'll be in stand!
The morning I shot my doe I seen a small buck with nose to the ground after a doe, the young ones are getting squirrely, its only a matter of time!;) |

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I live in Stony Point. I know a few guys that hunt in Pomona, good luck this season.
|
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They say some snow flurries tonight and overcast. So hopefully it will hide the moon and with the front coming through, there will be some good movement tomorrow. I will be out there in the morning still looking for a deer to even contemplate shooting. So let hope with the weather change I can find Mr. Buck.

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cold and wind burn is what I got today, not a single deer in 5 hours, but still is better than work or a sharp stick in the eye.
|
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had a great night last night ....windy and butt cold ...sleet and rain ....and I still had a nice 8 pointer (for NY) 8 yards from me ...see my team thread for story of your interested
I'll be on stand tomorrow night boys ......hopefully I'll meet up with that 8 pointer again ....;) |
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahhhhhhhhh the sideways rain, 30 degree temps, and 30mph NW gusts sure felt soothing last night [8D]. Saw 4 does and two 1.5 year old scrub bucks. I'm out the door and heading back for more fun this afternoon. Good luck to everyone.

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has been so windy that I haven't even bothered going out. It was raining this morning so I stayed in. Of coarse later in the day it changed to snow. Wish it would accumulate on the ground though, but no such luck. Still pretty windy today. I figure a deer could walk right up to the tree and rub on it and I would never know, wouldn't be able to hear anything and wouldn't be able to tell the difference of why my tree would be moving

RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Same here, VBR. Passed on going out this morning due to the wind. I will try tomorrow (and go into work late). :D
|
RE: Hey NY BOWHUNTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Listen V8 and Ranger, I normally wouldn't have gone last night for the same reasons you stated, but I have watched guys on here taking nice bucks during conditions like that .....so I went ...and I am so glad i did .
