Matt's X2's Recoveries. Video/Pics

Okay, after 2.5 days of trying I have Matt and Matt's (Matt's squared as we call them) recovery videos up. Now mind you, this is a very shortened version to get them to fit into Photobucket's 100mb restrictions.

Matt's Doe:

And Matt's Buck:

Again, what a great time we had. As you saw in my part 1 & 2 videos, I had my sightings just no shooting.

Matt (PA), Rob (PA), Dan (Jaws), Matt (RJ)

Good job fellas. Congrats on the deer. We've got pics, we've got video, do we have any stories anywhere?

Looks like a great time, guys. Nice to see a real track job, not one that was staged well after the deer was located. Did you give that hosting site a try for the larger files, Rob?

Thanks for posting these Rob, I appreciate it!

For those not with us this weekend, you can really see the body size of my buck at the end of that video when we were dragging him out. The horns really weren't that big on him, but he was as big (body wise) as any buck I've personally seen in PA. Matt actually said he was as big in the body as the 14pt he shot last fall. I've seen much larger in NY and VT.....but for PA he was a big boy with a big belly on him. I couldn't get his entire body to clear the ground in the barn when we hung him, but he had the scale at a hair over 165lbs (gutted) and his nose was still on the ground. I'm guessing he weighed in around 170-175lbs field dressed, and well over 200 on the hoof.

Thanks again guys for sharing this hunt with us, I look forward to having you all up again sometime soon!!

Nice job, those woods are awfully open for PA. I can't see over twenty five yards in our area.
I can guess you all ate well after that hunt.[:-]

I saw him run off, stop, and then get wobbly and start side stepping around. I heard a loud crash and saw a flash of white........but wasn't able to really see him once he went down. You can't really tell from the pic, but that hole is the entrance and he was slightly quartering away at about 10 yards when I hit him. It exited through the front leg low on the far side just in front of his armpit, and took out both lungs and the heart. He didn't go far........maybe just under 50 yards. As a rule though, I always back out and head to camp, wait for everyone else to finish up their morning/evening hunt, change into recovery clothes so I don't sweat up my good camo.......and then head back with a helper (or 3 [8D])to recover. If they are dead......they aren't going anywhere. ;)

I wasn't questioning nothing you guys did but was just curious why you didn't have your bow with you when tracking. That's the reason I asked If you seen him go down.

You put that arrow In there perfect, good shooting!!:D

I guess I had BETTER take and/or compose good pictures huh? LOL;):D

The one of my doe is a neat manipulation of the lighting by placing her and myself in a hard patch of warm early morning sun with a big section of dark pines behind me to really make everything in the foreground "Pop". The fill flash takes care of any foreground shadows.

RJ's buck is just taken where it fell and without the benefit of being able to really manipulate lighting you just count on a good pose and a quality expression combined with a little weighting of the background. (RJ vs the group of trees off his right shoulder)

.........Say "BUTT OUT!" :D

RE: Matt's X2's Recoveries. Video/Pics

The photos in the thread starter post were taken with my GL2 Video camera so there was no flash available but when taking pictures, always take some with flash to manipulate lighting and use in filling patches like under the hat brim.

For the group photo I put my digital on it's case and set the timer after I made sure it was all perfect. Matt (RJ) has a perfect spot as you can see to take them.

Awesome photos guys. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on your respective kills, also. Nothing like sharing a good time with good friends.....and the kills only add to that.

Nice looking "red" arrows in those quivers.;)

Actually Rob did pitch in on the drag. When we (and when I say we I mean me ;)) got the buck to the access road, Rob decided to take it from there the 50 yards to the tractor down the road..............
Wish we had video of the old manface plant on the first tug. :D

I think he technically sprained his "Drumette"..........but that's ok I got a wicked case of elbow tendonitis showing off my 50 yard arrow throwing skills. :D

YOu know, There was a time when I felt like a camcorder was just something to get in the way, or I wouldn't use it etc etc.
Let me tell you, it has quickly become one of the most used pieces of equipment I have! I highly recommend to everyone to see if you an add one to your gear. It is just so neat to try to catch your own hunt on film or buddies goofing off, trailng deer like you see etc. Those memories are absolutely priceless.

I have just a simple Sony Handicam mini DVD camcorder and it takes fantastic video (not the greatest in low light but not horrible either) it is SUPER light , barely takes up any room, and combined with the simple Pine Ridge Pro bow camera arm I can film my own hunts as well as I would want to see them for a grand total of about $550 which included discs and an extra longer life battery.
The camera and battery itself brand new was only $369.

It's one of those items where looking back I WISH I would have bought years ago.
