Gimicks

I wanted to know how much of the stuff on the market for bowhunting or just deer hunting in general is really needed or just a gimick? If your not carefull you could end up with alot more than needed, If you try carrying it all you couldexeceed your wieght limit in your stand..lol. I have been deer hunting since "92" and alot of you are more experienced and in the woods more, I would like to hear your opinions!!

P.S. Im not wanting to affend or upset anyone by this ???

Thanks Kruggy1

Well all you really need is a bow, some arrows, some camo, and yourself. You don't NEED anything else but it makes it a lot nicer to have. Thermacell works great for bugs and is nice to have around and it doesnt weigh much.

You don't even need that! But we like to give ourselves every advantage, even if its only mentally ;)

I dont buy into the need for every type of call on themarket (only use a grunt tube, rattle bad, and doe-in-estrous call) or every different type of buck or doe urine (dont use any to begin with). Just take what I need and go from there, I feel confident in the tools I use so no need to buy up this gimick or that.

PLEASE DONT TAKE OFFENSE TO THIS, ITS JUST MY OPINION!!!!

The one thing that I believe is kind of a gimick is the scent lock clothes, In my OPINION they are not worth an extra $100. I do use silver thread scent killing under layers, and scent wafers. Plus keep all my clothes in a lockable tote with a earth scent wafer inside. Only reason I say this is when you watch hunting shows and they are using them, They still get busted!!!! If they were givin to me by sponsors yes I too would wear them, But cant jusify paying $300 for a jacket. AGAIN JUST MY OPINION!!!

Agree 100% with this post. However, the technology does work initially, unfortunately a garment is pretty much used up prior to the purchase. I will say that the quality of the clothing is first rate. Very well made.

I think the biggest gimmick is deer pee. Ive heard lots of stories on how guys just pee on the ground themself and had deer come in to it.

So true... self confindence contibutes to the mental game. Having said that, some of my best bowhunting years were when I was younger. My only camo was my hat(John Deere of course), blue jeans, and a five brothers flannel shirt tucked in as to not get in the way of the draw.:DUsually I went right to the tree from work smelling like grease and sweat. Some nights ended with does busting me, but many were successful hunts. Successful meaning I saw deer throughout the hunt, and enjoyed myself. I killed just as many deer hunting "farmer style", as I did when bowhunting started becoming more mainstream. I to felt it was a must to have all of the bells and whistles hanging off of me to sucessfully kill a buck. There is no doubt thatcamo helps from being silloetted in the tree. I don't care what kind of scent block orcover sprays you put on. If the windconditions are wrong, chances are you'll get busted. Hunt the wind to the best of your abilities, wear some camo that's quiet, keep your hunting clothes outside in the clean air, and invest in a good pair of rubber boots. As you continue to hunt through the years, you will be the judge of what is necessity and what is not. Good luck.

i wondered how much i need when my pack got around 15 pounds.

I have a few calls thermacell a must and it works great my camcorder,a bottle of water My tripod for the cam which is most of the weight. i also have my poncho incase it rains and a rope for bothdragging and pulling the deer up a tree to gut.
The only thing i think i really did not need was the game cart i bought. It is reallyto loud to drag into the woods in most spot i hunt But iuse it to haul the heavy pop up i have it weighs like 30 poundsmy bucket seat and my pack. So it makes it easier when i can use it

Anything and everything associated or marketed to reduce the level of human scent. A whitetail can smell BETTER than a blood hound, and they've been proven to follow the scent of a human after using any and all of the stuff on the market!

I agree, the clothes are quality threads...nothing more. The technology is bunk, little dots of carbon wont trap in scent. except some of the sprays. PT told me it will take the smell of gasoline off your hands, I tried it, and sure nuff.

Some claim to take the smell out of a cotton ball drenched in doe urine, if it will do that...this stuff is magical.:D

Yeah, but I own SL.;) And science isn't something one "believes" in, it either works or doesn't.
Still great threads, clothing rather, none the less though. If I found the right price, I wouldnt hesitate a second to buy more, they make quality gear.

i think the biggest gimmick out there is that doe pee that costs like thirty bucks for like a 4 ounce bottle, i can't remember the name, but i know a couple guys who bought a bottle, they both soaked a cotton ball in it and after that, the bottle was empty. they hung them on trees about thirty yards from their stands, and one guy had a nice buck walk within ten yards of it and he never even looked at it. thirty dollars wasted. :D

I think its called code blue if not mistaken!!!!

I FORGOT ABOUT THE DEER VIEW MIRROR THATS FUNNY THERE!!!!!:D

Sent Lock and Sent Blocker waste of money but clothing is nice. Silver lined clothing may have some potential and way cheaper then SL and SB so if you’re not convinced you’re not out 500.00 at least…

Sent Killer Sprays yes I think they do help, chlorophyll I think it does reduce the breath but not 100%. I just wish I could find a way to keep my darn feet warm… they sweat like no other, nearly tried everything…

I think the deal with the sent products is that they are not 100% so think of them like this, they are basically trying to reduce your sent signature so that the deer doesn’t think your right on top of it. Even though they still might dart out of there at the slightest whiff…

I think controlling our breath has the best merit maybe 80% of the sent signature. I really love the Dead Down Wind Products[/b] especially the $4 toothpaste and the $5 mouth spray, plus it even tastes good! The laundry detergent is good and so is the filed spray although it is pricey…

If you cant afford high end sent control then just wash your cloughs in baking soda, line dry outdoors and store in a plastic bag, cheap-o-la

Just like some say the Rage 2-Blade isnt the absolute BEST broadhead ever produced, and it obviously is.
So I guess I should scrap the cheaperMuzzy's that have been killing deer just as dead and just as fast asthe more expensiveRage?

As far as keeping your feet warm, have you ever tried Hot Tronics foot warmers. They are very expensive but you wont have to buy disposible warmers for your feet again. They were originally designed for snow skiers. I bought my pair from Cozy Winters online. Now I can wear my knee high rubber boots all season. The batteries are rechargable and depending on what setting you use can last a long time.

my buddy went from muzzys to rages this year, I have seen him recover 2 deer he shot in the hind with muzzys, anyway he took 2 does this year with the rage and was bragging, blood trail this, blood trail that, blah blah blah. He sat with me the other day and I arrowed a doe with my muzzy, blood trail a blind man could follow, he was like wow, I tell him yup, rage that buddy.

If you think you need it, buy it and try it, if it doesn't work, its a gimmick. What one person swears by, another will swear it's a gimmick. I'd like to see truth in advertising, where if some celeb is going to promote something, they have to use it themself, but once again integrity is the issue there and no way to enforce it. Personally, I use bow, camo, stand, grunt tube, doe call, rattlin bag, and scent minimization. The tube, call and bag don't come into use until rut time, but I consider them essential to maximizing my potential for success during the season.
