Don't stop practicing!!
I figure it's about time for my annual reminder to all my bowhunting buddies on here to not forego your practice sessions.
It's usually about this time that some of us have had seasons open for three weeks or so, and it's all too easy to use every spare minute to get away and out into our stands. Problem is that when the moment of truth arrives, now there's been a good possibility that it's been three weeks since you stepped out back and concentrated on keeping your form and mechanics sharp. A couple quick suggestions: Leave a target in your deer-hunting vehicle so you can take a couple quick, practice shots once you arrive at your hunting destination before heading into the woods. Another good idea is to step out back with one single arrow every morning. Some people really think highly of this training method, since your first shot out in the woods is likely to be your only shot out in the woods. By shooting only one arrow for your practice session, it forces you to slow down and concentrate as if it was the real deal; you won't get another opportunity to "make it right" until the next day. However you decide to keep practicing, the main thing is to be sure that we do. We owe it to the game we pursue, and we owe it to ourselves not to let the whole summer's practice sessions go in vain at this point in the game. |
RE: Don't stop practicing!!

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
good post. i'm still shooting about 300 arrows a week right now. this is my first year seriously getting into bowhunting, only killed one deer about three weeks ago,and i want to perfect my shooting so i'm ready when ol freak nasty steps out! :D
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Yup, good post Greg, we need to keep at it weekly, even if its a few arrows before every eveninghunt or mid day shoots in between.

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
I killed a doe sun night. to make a long story short, i go out to shoot yesterday, and cant find my release. apparently, i got in a hurry and left my 60$ scott release out in the woods some where
hopefully its down there at the bottom of my tree where that stand is at. if not, im gonna have to buy another one:(i loved it soo much and am so used to it theres no way i could settle for a cheap one from wally world or something like that. |
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
I have admittedly been slipping here recently. Hunting alot can do that to ya. Im goin to sling some arrows in the morning thanks to this post.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
yep very good post. We all need keep in tune
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Great reminder, Greg! I, too, have slipped a bit in my practicing (only a few days;)).
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
I shoot 6 times right before i go out every day to make sure everything is still in tune.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Absolutely! I know guys who practice hard all summer, then when season opens they don't shoot at all. Then, 2 months later they finally get that shot they were looking for, and guess what? Yep, they miss.
We work hard for each and every shot opportunity we get. It's positively sensless to let that opportunity slip through our fingers simply because we began neglecting our practice. Great reminder, Greg. And thanks. |
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Thanks Greg, I have been lucky. I get off work at 3:30, Rob doesn't get off workuntil 4:30. This has given me enough time run home. Shoot a few arrows from 20 to 56 yards, and the hop in the "Scent Killer" shower. Normally, I want to get up in the stand ASAP, this has forced me to keep up the practice. Good luck to all. Looks like another great fall weekend.;)

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Great post Greg! I have a hard time finding all the time to get out hunting, and get stuff done at home, so yes, my practice time goes down after the season starts. I need to change that.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
hey, thanks for the reminder. I actually practiced earlier this week for the first time since our season opened on 9/13. bad me! I wish i could take a practice shot every morning but there's a very busy park that borders my back yard. sucks.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Exactly! Good post!
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
I ave a target set up so I can step out my bedroom door onto the patio, and shoot right from there. When the wife is in the shower in the morning, I shoot my bow. It will definitely improve your confidence to keep shooting during the season. The one-shot practice is great too.

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Great reminder, Greg. HOWEVER, for those of us where the season hasn't started yet, practice is all we have!! One more week!!

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Good reminder Greg. I do exactly as you prescribe. I shoot one or two arrows every night in our backyard. Sometimes I have to turn the flood lights on by the time I get a chance:eek:but its easy enough and you also make sure nothing's wrong, the sight didn't get knocked loose, etc. I had that cost me a deer one time so every time before I hunt, I make sure every piece of the bow is in working order. I've tagged out for the year now so all I can do is shoot in the backyard and dream of next year. Siiiiiiiiigggghhhhh.

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Just shot 125 arrows last nite with finishing on a solid 4 out of 5 in the X ring. Good reminder.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
I'm still shooting, I usually bust out the spot lights if I don't have time during daylight hours.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Good post Greg....I don't stop shooting, even if it is only a few arrows a day.

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Good post. I have shot 3 times this week, but this post reminded me to shoot today after hunting alot yesterday. I was off 2 inches to the right. Adjusted a little and I was right on after 10 minutes...thanks.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
I shot today as well. Not only does it ensure your equipment is still adjusted correctly but it also boosts my confidence.
|
RE: Don't stop practicing!!
Good one. I try to shoot a few rounds every day. I'm hunting with a recurve so I must practice to keep sharp. Its not easy!!

RE: Don't stop practicing!!
The top's getting awfully cluttered, so I'm going to unpin this but wanted to bump it back up for some to see who hadn't noticed it yet...
