future shooter
My family was on a 4-wheeler ride this june (just got the pics) and I had just gone through a deep water hole, leading the pack as I generally do,my mom and dad got stuck behind me so we pulled over and comensed to winching,I was walking back through the woods around the swamp and almost stepped on this little guy.He tried to run and got hung up on a deadfall,my girlfriend kit comanded me to go catch it so of course I did as I was told, she immediatly took it from me and I didn`t get to hold it again,oh well, that was about the coolest experiences of my life.Cutest little buger I ever saw and in the wild too, great experience.

RE: future shooter
Thats good, i was just asking because sometimes people see fawns in the woods and automatically assume that they are orphaned and take them in. But in actuality, momma is just right around the corner layin low. Awesome expirence though!

RE: future shooter
Samson thaught it was all good

RE: future shooter
yea, fawns aren`t very mobile, mom has to wander around, she could be a mile away but little guy knows she`ll be back shortly.
|
RE: future shooter
wow that is way too cool. Best thing that can come from getting stuck in the mud i guess.
|
RE: future shooter
Umm okay... if you see one in the woods you should keep your hands off it because sometimes the momma wont take the fawn back in after its been smothered in greasy human hands.. Lets hope that doe takes the fawn back in and it doesnt just die now..
|
RE: future shooter
Not true bro, actually mom will not leave it,in fact if she died getting hiy by a car or wolves another doe would pick it up,no harm done.
|
RE: future shooter
Bro?
Lets hope she does. |
RE: future shooter
|
RE: future shooter
Momma more than liekly abandoned that baby now that it was touched.
|
RE: future shooter
yea umm.... can`t read? it`s O.K.
NEVER WILL A MOM LEAVE HER FAWN DUE TO ODOR. Like I said if the mom got eaten by wolves and the fawn escaped for some reason, another doe will pick up the fawn. |

RE: future shooter
Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III, the man who has spent more time in his life observing and researching whitetails than pretty much anyone on earth right now says in his books, often in bold, that if you see a fawn NEVER PICK IT UP. Of course, if it is in danger where death is imminent within only a matter of seconds, the best thing to do may be to sit it out of danger, however, touching it for as little time as possible is only a second option.

RE: future shooter
In all likely hood a mother will not abandon the fawn due to the scent left on her, they go through too much to just drop it all and leave.
However, the fawn is in harms way of 'capture myopothy,' basically saying she could go into a state of shock from the expirence and have heart failure. Dont happen in whitetail very often, but again it is possible. No sense jumpin on the guy over this, its one incident, and a damn cool expirence for his family. The fawn probably went running in traffic and got hit by a car later anyways....kids ya know...[8D] |
RE: future shooter
What a cutie... almost wish you could keep the little thing. Thanks for sharing. My kids are looking over my shoulder and think that is pretty special.

From the site YOU posted... "Petting the fawn, talking to it, holding it, does not comfort it. This is a wild animal. Human voices, odor and touch only add to the stress and will cause additional harm besides the illness or injury. When a fawn seems calm it may be in shock." Soooooo, basically you picked it up and shouldnt have, and when you thought it was "calm" it was most likely in shock. You would have been better to look with your eyes, not your hands. |
RE: future shooter
Do we always have to have a good cop/bad cop in every single topic on this forum. He picked it up, kids pet it, he let it go, and now it is more than likely grown up. No harm no foul. Cute deer by the way.
|
RE: future shooter
I guess if you want to let the wemon and children pet the deer than by all means do so,if you think it`s detramental to the deer, don`t do it.
Having said that I wouldn`t do anything differantly and the fawn is now a spiker and in grave danger of being double lounged by my nephews pse nova. Again do some reserch on does leaving a fawn to die due to odor and you will find the fawn is now a spiker or maybe a six pointer. |
RE: future shooter
Cute little doe fawn!!!
Cool stuff!! |
RE: future shooter
thanks guys,it sure had a loud voice for a little guy

ORIGINAL: louddrummer69 He picked it up, kids pet it, he let it go, and now it is more than likely grown up. No harm no foul. Cute deer by the way. I disagree. So everyone who finds a fawn should pick it up, pet it and pass it around? Not a good idea. Enjoy them from a distance and leave em alone. |
RE: future shooter
what a cutie. you should never pick up a wild animal
|
RE: future shooter
actually Ihelped witha tag study of whitetail fawns. the biologists were not so concerned with scent, they said that most larg mammals were not quite like rodents or birds when it came to human contact with the young.
generally speaking it is unwise to handle a wild animal, and by no means was this a great thing to do, but I very highly doubt any harm was done to the fawn. Chances are that it is growing up nicely. Now small birds and small mammels are a completely differnt story. they will often abandon the whole area after human disturbance. |
RE: future shooter
Jesus Loves Archers,
did you ever do any resource into your source? Or check into Lee Rue's findings? I still haven't found any PEER REVIEWED articles to support your findings. Here is even a fact sheet by a governmental agency; most .gov sources are reliable with scientific data http://www.nps.gov/vafo/parkmgmt/upl...ct%20Fawns.pdf heres another .org source saying the same thing http://www.thegrowcenter.org/pdf/How...ded-Fawns2.pdf Not trying to argue you with you boss but you've yet to show me any support for what you say to be true. Also, you've yet to show me any counterarguments for what i've shown ya |
