Squirrel Season is on!
Bowtech Tomkat Bow
Well this is the first animal ever with a bow, and i go to tell you. It is great practice too. Shot these guys, about 12 yards. I feed them during summer ears of corn on the fence and when close to season i pile corn in front of my bow target. Using a Ameristep G20 popup blind and taking some great squirrels If you like squirrel, i suggest you use them to your advantage in gaining shooting skills from sitting and patience on waiting them out. Shot placement is another thing so you dont mess them up with broadheads. The first 2 i shot was with field points and was not killing the animals very fast. So i put on some Tight Point T-Lock Shuttle point broad heads and they work great for this as you can see in the last 2 images. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: Squirrel Season is on!
I really want to hunt squirrels, but I refuse to spend 20 bucks per squirrel. What I mean is, I would lose every arrow unless I was shooting them from high to low, which cannot happen. How do you keep your arrows from going to the friggin moon?

damn, I read the post too fast, totally missed that!

RE: Squirrel Season is on!
ORIGINAL: PreacherTony he has them trained to eat in front of his target .... Ha ha yes thats right i already said that in the post lol. Yeah man feed them off and on during summer. and then pile corn in front of your target mate to not lose arrows. In the summer i put 1/3 ear of corn on a nail on about 10 posts on my fence with a form nail. After they are coming and season gets close, like in sept i make a milk glass pile in front of my target. They will fight over it and you will get the bad boy first "king squirrel" of the pile. But to keep allot around you put corn on pole so thye dont really run each other off during summer:). I am a new bow hunter mate. I will go deer/hog/turkey hunting on the 7th-8th of this month. Hope i have some more pictures to show from that hunt! |

Ha, thats cool. Never ate squrril so dont know how they taste.
|
RE: Squirrel Season is on!
They are very tasty in my opinion. But you need little more then 4. So those are in freezer now.
I wont shoot them if i wasnt going to eat them. Even if it was good practice. |

RE: Squirrel Season is on!
Hold up, let me get this straight, you bait them right in front of a target and shoot them?
|
RE: Squirrel Season is on!

ORIGINAL: wahoohunter Hold up, let me get this straight, you bait them right in front of a target and shoot them? It is my first year actually using a bow to hunt with. So as to not go in the woods and wound big game animals i practice on something i also like to hunt. Im sure i will shoot them in the field as well later. But thats after I buy a new dozen arrows that will increase FPS by 20. ORIGINAL: Huntinman23 that is always fun but i like to shoot rabbits with my bow for practice. |
RE: Squirrel Season is on!
Lookd like some good shooting and you are on your way to a dinner!

RE: Squirrel Season is on!
Nothing wrong with it, I was just wondering. Just my personal prerogative that I don't feel quite right giving animals a false sense of security by providing them with bait and then killing them. To each his own, but I was just making sure I understood what you were saying.
ps...Good choice on the bow, I shoot the same one |
RE: Squirrel Season is on!
Heh , well mate. Any time you are in the woods siting up high or what ever the case maybe. You are using calls, attractants & scent covering products. So the animal already has a sense of security from the woods :).
So you see baiting is really not to much different then using other things to get in close. Just another method really. Well at least thats this new bow hunters opinion on it lol. |
RE: Squirrel Season is on!
HAHA pretty clever... fun to shoot with the .22 Mag too.

Well at least thats this new bow hunters opinion on it lol. It's illegal to bait in VA.... so wahoo doesn't exactly have the food option... But actually... yeah baiting is MUCH MUCH MUCH different than using "other" things to get animals in close. But its a squirrel.... legal method..... archery tackle... good on you! Good luck this fall! |

RE: Squirrel Season is on!
HAhaha exactly "shelf life of 20 years" if you do it wrong lol
That sux that yahoo cant bait them, some of the laws these people think up are rediculous. Sometimes i think they sit and make some of them up to make it harder on hunters. Just another way to try and stop hunting. |
