How far is too far?
I had a buddy last week call me to help him track a deer...and while in the process of getting the hole gist of the story, he said he shot it at 60 yards!Ok I've heard of people making these long, crazyshots. For me,once they get past 40, I will not even think about attempting a shot. I'mthinking of myself being an ethical hunter, why take a shot that dangerously decreases the chances of bagging that deer. I would rather watch them walk then attempt tomake a tough shot and wound one no matter what the size/sex. This is my ethical standpoint...and my only standpoint. What is your range? Any otherthoughts on these extremely long shots?

RE: How far is too far?
You're buddy's name isn't "Sutton" by any chance is it?;)
|
RE: How far is too far?
30 yards max for me....myabe a few farther but not past 35
|
RE: How far is too far?
Nothing past thirty. after that the arrow is in the air way to long. They could hear your bow and you het them in the back legs from a far distance.
|
RE: How far is too far?
So what were his results? Did you find blood? The arrow? The Deer?
|
RE: How far is too far?
If you haveany doubtsabout making the shot, it's too far.
|
RE: How far is too far?
30 MAX. Usually 20-25 is the farthest.
|
RE: How far is too far?
i'll shoot a big bodied deer at 40 yards, thats the max for me tho.. and thats even pushing it.. i would NEVER take a shot at 60 yards...
|
RE: How far is too far?
IMO the real problem with the long distance shots is that it gives the animal quite of bit of time (relatively speaking here) to move regardless of how gifted an archer is at hitting a spot. The olympic archers compete at 70 meters and they are redicluously accurate. However, put a deer, elk, whatever out there at 70 meters and try shooting at it. If it hears or sees that bow go off it can move a long way before that arrow arrives.

RE: How far is too far?
Every shot I've taken on a deer in archery has been within 25yds. I won't take a shot past 30 as of right now.
|
RE: How far is too far?
We can all hit targets in the back yard out to 50-60+ yrds but an animal is NOT JUST A TARGET[:@]!
For me its 25yrds and lessONLY if given the right shot. Most deer i have taken have been on ave around 15yrds.. |
RE: How far is too far?
Normally anything beyond 20 yards Is to far for me, I shoot a recurve. Some years I've been dead on at 25 yards, them particular years I took 2 different doe's at 21 and 22 yards with perfect double lung shots.
This year Is a different story. My shooting has really suffered this year. I can't for the life of me get consistent enough from 15 to 20 yards to be shooting deer at that range. Anything under 15 yards will be toast this year. Anything over 15 yards might get a pass unless I get my consistency and confidence back where It should be and usually Is. We'll see how It goes and how I feel I guess. |
RE: How far is too far?
I'll go to 40 under optimal conditions no wind, rain with a clear shot and the animal is not on alert. But in reality I put myself 30 yards and under for just about every shot I have ever made with a bow.

RE: How far is too far?
30 yards max for me. I am glad your buddy got the deer but that is just crazy, shooting that far should never happen to many what if's
|
RE: How far is too far?
I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are with the shot. I have pins set at 20 thru 40 yards at every 5 yards, but thta doesn't mean just because I have a pin for that far I'm shooting that far. I won't shot anything beyond 30 yards and it has to be one helluva buck to get me to shot that far out.
|
RE: How far is too far?
I feel most comfortable at 30yds or closer

RE: How far is too far?
I'd say the lack of a pin for the distance one is shooting SHOULD throw up a red flag.;)
|
RE: How far is too far?
My max range is 30yrds. No exceptions!
|
RE: How far is too far?
How far is too far? Beyond you ability to shoot 100% kill shots.
For me I stick to 25 or less, because I can put every arrow in a small group. Also, I don't practice at any farther distance at this point so I haven't even got a pin set up for any farther. |
RE: How far is too far?
My max would be 40 yrds. I feel comforatable with my broadheads shooting at that distance and have become very good at grouping them. I do have a 50 yrd pin set, but thats for fun and tournaments. Never shot a broadhead at that distance and couldn't trust my yardage judgement either to take a shot at a deer.
|
RE: How far is too far?
Tops for me is 35 and everything must be perfect. Deer not alert, perfect angle, no wind, wide open lane...That said most of my shots are between 5 and 20 yards.
|
RE: How far is too far?
I haven't reached my max range yet. I'm still working on those 20-30 yard shots.[&:] I have shot a couple at 40 but several dozen at less than 20.

RE: How far is too far?
I've never shot a deer past 30 yards with my bow. That being said....as previously stated by some...if the conditions were good, no wind, animal not alert, animal feeding broadside, etc. I'd be comfortable out to approx 40 yards. But not every time, in every situation.
|
RE: How far is too far?
Most of the stands i have dont let me shoot past 30 yards max, im very comfortable shooting that far on an animal, i do have two stands set up where the deer are often at around 40 yards. i will shoot out to 40 yards, and have marks for distsances up to 70 yards, but on an animal 45yards is my max, and only if the deer is not alerted at all and gives me a very good boardside or slightly quartering away shot.
It all depends on what your comfortably with. like said before if you have a doubt don't shoot. |
RE: How far is too far?
The longest shot I have made on a deeris 36 yards,in a tree stand that looks far away. I like my shot to be with in 20yards, but if needed I am good to 30.
Does anyonebow huntantelope, and if so how what was your shotest and longest shot? |
RE: How far is too far?
right now 20 maybe 30 i have not got a deer yet and do not want to try past 20 or 30 till i get one closer.
after that properly 40 but i know alot of guys that robin hood there arrows at 60 |
RE: How far is too far?
Last year was my longest shot... 30YDS. All others have been 20YDS or less. Glad he killed it though... He's lucky he didn't just wound it.

RE: How far is too far?
I'm real comfortable at 40, would be willing to go to 45 on a TOTALLY unsuspecting animal, but I've never had to take a shot over 34yds on a deer in all of the deer I've killed. Now I did once misjudge a MONSTER for being at 32-34, when he was really at 40, and that ended up in CLEAN WHIFF, no harm, no foul, but I was angry at myself as all get out over that one. Especially since I was shooting quite well at 40yds, and I totally blew it!!!
|
RE: How far is too far?
my personal max is 35 yards. 90% of the time i will wait til they are inside 30, and only a bit further than that if all the conditions are absolutely perfect (unalert deer, no wind ect.)
