Anything that nature does not produce for a deer to eat that is placed in the wild is bait and not fair chase!
I COULDNT say it ANY better than THAT! well said hawkeye!
OK, here we go again! Did nature put in that soybean field? Or the corn field? Or the apple orchard? No the farmer did. So I guess those are all bait and not fair chase right?
Thank you, Greg! That's what I was getting at yesterday. Some folks just don't seem to be happy unless they've got something to complain about.I'm always amazed by people who think that their way of doing things absolutely has to be the ONLY right way.

If I wanted toconvert to the way of thinking of some of these fellas, I'd have to back WAY up and say that TRUE "fair chase"would be:

-Spot-and-stalk or still hunting only.
-No stand hunting. That wouldn't be fair CHASE; that's an ambush.
-Self-made bows, arrows, heads and strings only, and those must be made using what nature provides. I mean come on, to be worthy of taking a deer, you should be able to craft your weapons, right?
-No hunting anywhere near crop fields. Humans planted those... they're not "natural".
-No store-boughtcamoflage. That's an unfair advantage. You have to make your own with what nature provides.
-No purchased calls. All calls have to be made using your own voice.
-While we're at it, no eyeglasses or contacts allowed. If you can't see well enough to hunt, you shouldn't be out there.

.... and on and on until we get to the point where you have to walk out into nature butt-naked, pick up two rocks, bang them together until you get a sharp edge, then chase down your quarry and slit it's throat.

Jeesh.
Ya got a point there...
amen

The question is rather mute because the only thing Cmere Deer attracts is hunters.

whoa! ZING!!! that was good.

personally, i think apples are the best choice...but on the other hand, i'm not a big fan of baiting. attractants are okay though.

I dont buy into the deer hunting gimmicks and the sort, but I have several meat hunting buddys that will rake up acorns from their hunting area, pour Cmere deer over them and let them soak, and then put them back out.......they swear by it. From what Ive seen....you could do the same thing with molasses or sugar water lol

The fact that you put things out in the woods doesnt necessarily mean you need to HUNT OVER THEM!!

We take apples out and scatter them...we have mineral licks....food plots...and the 60 acres we hunt is surrounded by corn fields...there is so much food in the area its sick, but we like to provide the buffet of options for the deer herd....Mineral licks are like vitamins anymore and actually provide to the animal. We planted some good food plots as well this year and they have been browsing those goods as well.

Point being if you go out there and put stuff on the ground only 1 time a year and bait in the deer and kill em, thats not really helping your herd and not really fair chase. We keep constant mineral and food sources available on the land all year....

CB,
If you are planting food for deer and are either hunting over it or hunting travel routes to or from the food then you are using that area to attract deer. You may be benefiting the deer by providing them with good, balanced meal but bottom line your are artifically attracting deer.
That being said i'm all for it i just hope no one thinks that just because the food plot or mineral lick is good for the deer that they are not using it as an attractant.
Is it fair chase? That's up to you and in my opinion is a very tough question.

The thing that gets me is this stuff is illegal to use in NY state, yet I can walk into WalMart and they have shelves of it. (Of course, there is a little sign next to it saying it is illegal to feed deer in NY state. So, why are you selling it??)

Welp, God gave me the eyes to see, the ears to listen, the hands to shoot and draw my bow, and the feel to pull em outa the woods, and the teeth to chew em with...He also gave me a brain to think and outsmart mr. whitetail.....lol

I take every advantage i can when i enter the woods. Lack of scent, use of scent, treestands, quiet clothing, good equipemnt, and i also go out of my way to try to provide a thriving healthy deer herd to hunt.....Where I hunt you cant use much more than aslug gunfor deer, so i guess i could critique others using a rifle as cheating or taking advantage of something legal in your area....Its still alot more of fair chase than shooting them in the petting zoos like the do on TV.

Ben, i realize that and just don't see it as a way of hunting.I asked him if it was illegal and he just told me you can't see or smell the pile. I clearly know it is here in PA and i thought about taking a "you know what on it", but feel bad...
