New land.... what to do?
I just got permission to hunt a new piece of property today. It's about 400 acres of the big buck capital of the county [8D]:D. My problem (if you can call it that) is my season is 2 weeks away. I'm all setup on my main land that I've been hunting for years and have been out of the woods for about a month now.
This new piece would require some crash course scouting and stand locations (like yesterday). How invases does one get at the risk of pissing off a bruiser?? I know next to nothing about the land except where the boundaries are and that there are monster bucks roaming around there. With 2 weeks before the opener and another good piece of land ready to go what would you do? |
RE: New land.... what to do?
Id get online and find some topomaps, and pick out a few spots, so that you know where your going. Low impact on the new place. Good luck.

RE: New land.... what to do?
I've got some new land to hunt this year thats kinda last minute. I hung a couple of stands and I'll look around in between hunts. I'll also have a climber ready to go if I just want to "wing it".

RE: New land.... what to do?
I'd do little arm chair scouting (topos etc.) and then get out and hang a couple observation stands. Hunt the observation stands for a couple days and see where deer are moving too and from, connect the dots with the topos/aerials you were looking at before and then change the setups accordingly.

RE: New land.... what to do?
I have got new land this year too, and i just started my major scouting within the last two weeks, some of which i did this weekend. I would go in there scout it up, and do it all in a day. then i would spend the first weeks of the season hunting the other property you have had for a long time. After that come back to it and the deer will have returned to their habits. At least thats what I am doing, im given the places I have been on in the last couple of weeks at least another 3 weeks before i hunt them.

RE: New land.... what to do?
Get a topo, do some distance scouting, and most importantly find out where others are hunting on the property and what tactics they employ...then adjust.

RE: New land.... what to do?
Get some good topo maps and arieal photos. Get some idea of what you want to look by looking at your maps, that way when you get in you don't have to do alot of stomping around. Hang a few stands now and then get out and wait for the rut. You have plenty of time if you just go about it smart and look for high percentage spots.

RE: New land.... what to do?
I think you need to call PT and have him recon it for you this season and then you can decide whether or not to hunt it next year.:D

RE: New land.... what to do?
I would get a topo and send it to Gri22ly, let him look it over. I would do a few evening hunts in observation stands.
Or go with WKP_Todd's appoach and run and gun:D |
