Bowling Ball Buck
About 3 yrs ago I was driving down a rural street, about ten at night. I could see a deer up ahead of me, standing in the street not moving, it was a buck. I stopped at about 30 yrds. Something looked wierd, I put my bright,s on. Coming out of his stomach a flesh tube about a inch in diameter and afoot long,on the end of it was a ball about the size of a bowling ball, there was brown hair on both, no blood or scar,s. He walked off and the thing swung back and forth, it didn' t look like it botherd him a bit. Must of been a tumor? Anybody ever seen something like that?

RE: Bowling Ball Buck
I think I' ver heard of that and its caused by some kind of parasite

RE: Bowling Ball Buck
Somebody posted about something similar a few months ago. I think that they had harvested it and it was internal. I think it just turned out to be a giant cyst or something. Do a search on tumor, and maybe it will still be there, although switching formats probably dumped it.

A few years ago I saw a doe standing in a field on the side of the road with a growth between her front legs about the size of a bowling ball. It was toally covered with hair just like it was a normal part of her body and it didn' t seem to bother her at all.

Realtree outdoors has a segment on one of their Homemade Videos that has a deer with that condition. They said it is caused by a parasite and not usually life-threatening.

RE: Bowling Ball Buck
i have seen kinda the same thing on one of the drury bros. videos. very weird indeed. apparently they have seen that buck more than one year and the deer has lived through it i guess so i don' t think that it would be life threatening to the deer. just like shadowace and commndr45 said, i think its a parasite/cyst/tumor or more really just an abnormal growth. i dunno!! lol :D

RE: Bowling Ball Buck
One of the guys in our camp shot a buck about 3 or 4 years ago that had a similar growth about the size of a softball in its groin area. He cut it open and green fluid came out.[X(] The butcher said the same as some of the other replies that it was caused by a parasite, but it sure was nasty.

RE: Bowling Ball Buck
Huntingbry, that would have been an abscess if there was green fluid inside. What you likely saw, hanging from the bucks stomach was a teratoma. A tumor that contains hair, teeth and bone. This would be the bucks twin that never developed. The parasitic cysts are located within the body cavity, usually attatched to the liver. These are caused by a tapeworm.
