Another hunting show question....

Ok. No debate about "best show", etc. I was watching a show last night (don't remember which one, but on the Outdoor Channel). They were shed hunting and talking about this massive buck they were hoping to take. It turns out they find the carcass of the buck (a really nice B & C bruiser) that apparently died of natural causes. They proceed to lament what a horrible thing this is that the buck died before they got a chance to take it. What a terrible loss it was.

NOW, my take is this....... hunting is a never-ending contest between man and animal. In many, many cases, the man wins (eventually). In this case, I think it is pretty cool that this old cuss was able to outwit them for all these years. They recovered the carcass (and the rack), so it is not like he is lost forever. I think it would bea wonderful thing to mount the rack on the wall and spend many years talking about "this is the one that got the better of us". What is your take on this?

I saw the show. It was the Drury boys....and they'd nicknamed the buck "Heart attack".

Nature won....and if I remember correctly....they were going to mount this deer. A fitting tribute to an awesome animal.

Well there are always more deer to hunt....If it was the last one on earth. I would be pissed. But ya it would make for a good story. Now you gotta start looking for his son that should be coming to a very nice age.

could not agree with you more gundeck, mount it and tell everyone about all your encounters you had with that deer.
that deer scored 208 or something like that.

Right, Jeff, it was the Drury boys. And, yes, they were going to mount it. I just got the impression (and it might just be me) that they felt is was almost "unnatural" that the buck died this way. How could you get more natural? It is not often you hear about the buck winning the final round.

As soon as you started describing the show I thought about the Drurys and "heart attack." I completely agree with you that while it's disappointing to have not gotten that buck we should still remember and respect him as the one that beat us.

Gundeck, you make a real good point and it's something we should all be aware of.

I guess it isn't "unnatural" for a buck to die at 5.5yrs......but I'd still be wondering what got him.

I have it on one of my old DVDs, I'll try and find it when I get home, I could have swore they said what caused the death.

Probably ran himself to death during the rut and got so weak he couldn't survive the winter. 5.5 is about the tail end of prime for a deer. They might grow bigger antlers for another year... but as far as physical condition goes... 4.5 to 5.5 is when they are there strongest.

I think they win a hell of allot more times then we do! If we won all the time people would have 4.5's+ hanging everywhere on there walls. Every year huge P&Y and B&C bucks die of old age and probably have never been seen by a hunter.

They win most of the time If you ask me.
