RE: SAD LOSS, Found wounded BUCK

Ive been hunting for 13 years and every year I take 3 to 4 deer a year depending on what the game commission has in there little minds. And ive never missed a deer and never had to track a deer more then 50-100yards. That hunter obviously either was trying to show off or rushed his shot. There is no excuse for missing an arrow shot almost 3 feet from your aiming spot..I shoot between 50-60 arrows a day and i score myself to make sure they are all in the X ring..And I shoot in all kinds of weather snow. rain. high wind. Im an archery junky. In my 19 years of shooting bows whether it be my longbow when i was 10 or my bowtech commander...Ive had some "fliers" but 3 feet is way off. I know ill get ridiculed but i hear lots of hunters say 8-10" groups is meat on the table id rather not take the risk of the 8-10" being a neck or a head shot that severely injuries and not kills an animal. Id rather keep all my bowshots under 30yards and 3" groups.

In ref to first bold quote: If you have never missed a deer, then you just haven't been hunting that long. I don't think I know of too many serious bow hunters that haven't missed probably a good 5-10% of the deer they have shot at... in fact, with a lot of hunters, that percentage is far far higher. As to short tracking, thats good. I've never had an arrow enter an animal and failed to recover it. Its a fact that I am very proud of. Its great and all that you never shoot anything except 30x rounds and all, but targets and real game in real conditions are not the same, no matter how good you are.

Second bold quote: Not around here you won't get ridiculed for thinking that way (see bold print). Most all of us on here are perfectionists. We practice harder, hunt harder, are more critcal, and judge harsher than most of the rest of the community. Lots of us are on here all year round, stewing, sharing laughs and ideas about the upcoming season.

While you may feel you are good and salty as a hunter, there are some of us here that have taken as many deer in a single season as you have in your entire 13 years afield. Trust me when I tell you that if you haven't missed yet... just wait til next time. No matter how much you prepare, things can and do happen. I'm not trying to talk down to you here, please don't take it that way, but there are plenty of things that we don't know about what could or did happen with this deer.

A few years ago, I had a doe at 8 steps. Drew back, bent at the waist, went to release the shot.... when I did, I heard a noise that sounded like a baseball bat breaking. I SMOKED the bottom limb of my bow on the arm of my treestand. Missed the deer by several FEET. Fortunately a clean miss. Over the seasons I think I've probably sunk an arrow into just about every species of tree that grows in the south... hollys, oaks, maples, several varieties of evergreens....and I'm no different than you.... I shoot several hundred arrows a week, nearly year round. I routinely hit baseball sized spots from upwards of 70 and 80 yards. Stand me at 20 and I can break a nock almost every shot.... but trust me... shooting in the yard and shooting in the field are far far far from the same thing.

Wishing that a hunter, be him a crack shot or a near sighted Mr. Magoo to go commit suicide is simply uncalled for, immature, and flatly not very warmly regarded around here. We all joke and carry on with each other, but there comes a point where it goes to far.

Well put and very articulate and I appreciate that. And Ive seen some hunter take spikes in a state wheres there is a 3 point on one side rule. And I hate unethical hunters. But you can understand why that guy one shot I dont like.. he took a 55yrd shot at the head. And nailed the deer in the eye and the shot came out the neck. That was UNETHICAL and hes so fricking lucky. he didnt tear the deers jaw off or brain damage the deers brain. OR blind it.

just an overall tragedy.....I have had that happen to me yet...but like swampcollie says....it happens to everyone. So I fear the day it happens to me and hope i am a very luck exception. If he meant do do it....its not cool. But if it was an accident he has my sympathy....I know how i would fee. [:'(]

The first thing I thought of is that looks like aoneshotlightsout shot attempt. Guess everyone else was thinking the same thing. That really sucks. Hope that shot was an accident and whoever shot him wasn't aiming there

We have all witnessed our share of things unethical and wrong. The true test comes with how you deal with it. I do understand your frustrations, all too well.

If I can keep myself from doing it, I usually don't try and change people's minds, or 'argue with an idiot' so to speak. I get caught up in it sometimes, because like yourself, I am good natured deep down, and don't like to see this sort of thing. I figure that if I can get outspoken enough, then maybe one day this kinda thing will stop. But the reality is, you can't really save the world all by yourself (pardon the cliche), especially over the internet. If someone is going to blaze a path to their own distruction, there isn't much you can do, just try to get yourself and your friends out of the way. I'm sure that PreacherTony could tell you about open vs closed hearts with respect to his life's calling, he deals with it more than I could ever know.

RE: SAD LOSS, Found wounded BUCK

I saw an article one time about this guy who shot this buck and when he went to cape it he noticed a bump on the deers nose. he was curious so he cut the skin off and there was a broadhead lodged in this deers skull. simply amazing to me how that deer lived and did as well as it did it was big.

And another article i read was a bout a guy and his brother i think walking in a park. They saw a deer coming at them and it just started goring one one of them. they finnaly got the police there and they shot the deer. They did an autopsy and it turns out that deer had several rounds of 00 buckshot in his body and a broadhead lodged in his hip, no wonder he was pissed.

Anyways this just goes to show that there are some peoiple out there who are just reckless and dont care. But we cant jump to conclusions that makes us the enemy.

sad loss but at least he found him

Pretty bad shot. I hope it wasn't intentional.
