Can Of Worms

I know I am probably opening a can of worms, but I am going hog hunting and the outfitter is strongly recommending that we use fixed 125 Gr. broadheads versus mechanical. I bought some 100 Gr. Rage 2 Blade because the last time I went deer hunting one of the guys opened the nastiest wound I have ever seen on a deer. Bled the old boy out in what must have been only seconds. I clearly understand the difference between hogs and deer, but is this really a concern? Do I need to go get some fixed heads?

On a hog, I sure wouldn't use mechs!! Them things are awfully thick skinned. The outfitter I think Is doing the right thing here.

Hogs aren't deer...

For someone to tell you to use a certain grain broadhead is crazy. What if my arrow setup requires I use a 100 grain tip, or even worse an 85 grain tip. When I change to a 125 grain tip it can change the strength of my spine and throw off shots as well. I'd either go with the current grain tip in a fixed blade, or tell him to pound salt. If you have upper 60's to low 70's of KE, I'd be telling the guy where the salt block is and using my rage 2 blades.

I have had some outfitters tell me that they will not, under any circumstances, allow expandables. I would go with what the outfitter says. The live it 24/7/365.

I shot a hog with a Magnus Stinger a few months ago and after seeing how thick skinned the thing was, I don't think I'd ever use my Rages on them. I'm glad I had a sturdy fixed blade. We went to pick up another guy who shot a hog with a Rage and we couldn't find the hog. It may have been a shot placement issue, but maybe not![:-] Leave the Rages for deer and use a fixed blade.

Its not a rule, simply a suggestion. I would for the sole respect of the outfitter, But if he's pumping enough KE to use a rage then so be it, If its not in the contract then he has the right to shoot whatever he wants. JMO
