I am thinking gut shot...liver blood isn't "chunky" and is usually bright brightred. That's one of those"go home, and look again in the morning" tracking jobs, all you prob. did was push that deer. Did you happen to look around any and all water sources in your area?

Im thinking gut shot too.

Smelling the blood and arrow will help determine the shot too.

I've hit two deer in the guts before (not pround but it happens) and that blood is dark and chunky, not to mention quite stinky, but I did find both deer. Let them lay over night and your odds of finding them greatly increases.

When I was younger I shot two in a row one year in the liver. One ran 110 yards and piled up as if lung shot the other made it only about 70 yards before piling up. The Liver shots arevery deadly IMO, not optimal, but deadly. It does serve to give them 3 hours minimumIMO if the shot looks too far back.

Not the case all the time. I've shot 2 different doe's In the liver and they both were alive yet the next morning. It can happen but doesn't usually happen.

I'm thinking guts to Tony. People that don't know any better will assume stuff. It all comes with experience, hopefully a lesson was learned here and I'm sure he will be a better hunter/tracker because of It. Something good can come out of stuff like this too.

Better luck next time!!

A liver shot will always kill a deer, but they can live for longer than you would imagine. Even with a liver shot I would not be surprised to see the deer make it 12 hours.

That is a gut shot.

A liver shot with the rage head would do two things, 1. have a blood trail like something out of a horror movie, ton of blood in the liver with a 2 inch hole, and 2. kill the deer in under an hour.

I have seen the rage 2 blades in direct liver shots and the results, while not as quick as a heart or lung, are deadly.

It doesn't take much to just miss the liver and hit the paunch. A gut shot deer can live a long time and go a long way...
