Question..who's done it?

Here's my dilemma, I have a stand site that I'm as excited about as I've ever been over a single feature. The problems are two-fold one it's on public land, which doesn't really bother me, I hunt 70% on public land. The bigger issue is it's .81 miles by GPS (as the crow flies) up and down 2 mountains and then up the third. (and if you don't think we have Mountains in Ohio Climb these 3 peaks before you speak ;)) Walking it is tough enough, packing a climber in and out is gonna really be a back breaker!
Here's my possible solution, I can buy a Summit Bushmaster stand through my Cabelas Club membership for $139.99 with my points it'll basically befree. I figure I can tote it in the first time and after each climb hide it by a tree where no one could see it and run a cable lock through it. Then it's in the "area" when I want to hunt there. Believe me where I'm going only a very select few willever get to let alone come back with a cable cutter and carry it out.

Legalities I'm unsure of..and really for this infraction, I think the only offense could be littering?

So what say you? Good Idea or Wrong? Ya I risk losing a stand, but it's OK it'll only be a Summit ;)

RE: Question..who's done it?

the only time i ever leave a stand out in the woods when i hunt public land is the night before gun hunting. i go out put it up and get the hell out of there. i dont think that it would be a problem if you found a spot where you know no one will go and find it. so i think you will be fine.

It may hold your scent and spook some deer, but I think that is your only concearn IMO

RE: Question..who's done it?

I would do it. Leave it there and arrive each consecutive time without the aching back, & soaked with sweat.
Good luck.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I would definitely risk it. It really sucks lugging a climber that far in and back out every time you choose to hunt in such a location. I've done it many a times. You finally get there and you are so bushed by the time the deer start coming you are passed out. Not to mention all the noise you make busting a trail through the brush with that climber on your back. Dang near impossible to be quiet and still get to your stand without kicking up deer. JUST LEAVE IT THERE.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I did it in Colorado several times last year for the same reason... Most states that I've ever hunted in simply state that you can't leave a stand out past last day of season, so I don't even think you'd be pushing any issues there, either.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I'll add that I also picked up one of those remote lights that will start flashing red from about 50 yards away... I found my GPS could get me really close, but in a brand-new area like that the next morning (I was going back in the dark before the sun came up), I could get within 30 - 50 feet or so, but I was still frustrated by having to walk around and find the tree my stand was on.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I have done it quite a few times over the years Bob and never had a problem, good luck.

RE: Question..who's done it?

Do it all the time, some time's I'll have2 or 3out at a time, public land is all I hunt.

RE: Question..who's done it?

Seems reasonable to me, especially if you lock it down good. And I KNOW about the "mountains" in OHIO, trust me. That walk is probably more like 2.5 miles once you figure all of the up and down and around this and that to get there.

RE: Question..who's done it?

Hang it and leave it, I do and it's on public land about the same hike as you have in. If they find it and want it more power to them.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I'll leave yours alone if you leave mine alone.:D

I wouldn't leave it if I wasn't returning in the morning. Mine is also outside all the time so scent has never seemed to be an issue with me. Aint no mountains in N lima so you must be traveling, sounds like H.H. area:D. Pile of info you've given out, you might have company. I even know how dar off the road it is. I'm excited too. :Djk

Definetly wouldn't leave it if I wasn't in the area. Learn to pack light. I know the officers go through the woods and remove stands, locked or no.

Could also get some critter chewing on it when your not there making it unsafe to use and that could possibly be in the dark.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I've done it before and probably will again. I've hung stands and taken all the steps outfrom the bottom 12 feet. I then will hide a set of climbing sticks in a blowdown or something on the route into the stand. Hanging a 12 foot section of a stack'em stick is a piece of cake in the dark and then have the screw ins the last few feet. Cuts down on the yahoos that might use your stand. A determined thief will still get it if he wants it. I've also brushed in and hid my climber many nights but only when I was coming back the next AM

RE: Question..who's done it?

Bob , Look at it this way,as hot as this place sounds you will probably only need to hunt it once or twice before you whack the big one.:)
And any slime ball that would steal it is gonna be to lazy to carry it out any ways.[:o]

RE: Question..who's done it?

I am thinking along the same lines as David.Light hang on,screw in steps if they are allowed.Pull the last 3 or 4 steps and stash them close by.How likely is it that someone is going to find your stand if it is as difficult to get to as you are describing?

RE: Question..who's done it?

Bob, we would do that frequently over here ... as far as I know, there would be zero issuessince you are not damaging trees and you plan on coming back for it ...

Planter 09-20-2008 07:40 AM

RE: Question..who's done it?

I guess i'm one of the few that leave their stands on public land up. I've banged thru the woods in the dark with a climber and it's a drag. I will also admit to using screw in steps when I should not. I even cut shooting lanes and clear limbs that might mess me up.
I don't know believe we have to pull our stands here but I do know I'm not supposed to damage treesDon't know how to break that habit.

I use the GPS to find my stands but use Bright eyes to pinpoint the tree. That give me the option of approaching from any direction dependent on the wind of the day..

RE: Question..who's done it?

You really need to look into getting a Tree Saddle.

HuntingBry 09-23-2008 08:03 AM

RE: Question..who's done it?

I think you should be OK doing that. What are the chances of a thief having bolt cutters that far back and wanting to carry a stand out? If they get it, they will have earned it.

On another note, we use pack frames for carrying our gear on on 1 mile plus hikes in. It better balances the load and makes the walk in a lot easier. Something to consider for future reference.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I do it all the time. One HUGE tip: make sure that the padded seat/armrests are covered. If it rains on them, that thing will stay soaking wet for days. It'll even start getting moldy and smelly.

Nothing worse than climbing up the tree and sitting down, only to have your entire ass soak rightthrough the whitie tighties. That makes for a long, miserable day.

Keep the seat dry.

When I'm leaving mine out - I wrap the seat cushion in a garbage bag and bury it under a brushpile/logs.

RE: Question..who's done it?

makes sense and will have it there once you arrive, Like quick said just need to watch the seats from getting wet and squirrels and mice getting in the cushions

RE: Question..who's done it?

I've hid my climber in the woods several times, I just hide it under a brush pile...

I wasnt aware you were allowed to put a stand up in public land but i guess you can. hmmmm learn something new everyday..im too fat for a tree stand so thats why i never looked into it.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I leave mine out all the time, on the other hand I have had 3 cobbed in the last 10 years also.

RE: Question..who's done it?

I leave a climber out almost every season, haven't had one taken yet.
You shouldn't leave it right where you want to hunt, someone may take advantage of the work you put in scouting.
