I'm so PISSED at my buddy right now!!!

ok, kind of a long story, i just need to vent right now. a friend of mine decided he wants to get into bowhunting this year, but didn't want to spend a lot of cash. so he buys a used bow. nothing wrong with that. but heres the bad part. he goes into wal mart, picks up the cheapest arrows and broadheads they have, doesn't bother to tune his bow or even see where his broadheads are hitting, he just screws em on and goes huntinyesterday afternoon. a doe happened to walk by, he says he "guessed" her at around 45 yards, and slings an arrow at her. well, he can't find the arrow or any tracks, so he calls me to come track it for him. i found her tracks going into the woods, and i'm thinkin, whew he missed her at least he didn't wound her. not five yards later i spot blood. very dark, almost blackish blood. i'm sure everybody here knows what that means. gut shot. the fact that he couldn't find the arrow is probably because it didn't pass through. well, long story short, i told him we should back off til tomorrow. today i went back and spent 5 hours searching for this deer, and i used every tracking trick and technique i know. no deer. i'm just so pissed that he picked up a bow without even practicing and took a shot that long on top of it, with no respect for the animal. i told him exactly what i thought of it.am i right to be mad, or should i give him a break?

Every doubt to be mad....when getting into bowhunting he should have been open to your advice and you should have explained practicing to him. You also should have explained that bowhunters respect what we hunt, and try to take every step in making a clean ethical kill.

I'm in the same situation, I have a buddy just getting into bowhunting. Last year he bought his bow after 1-2 weeks into season. He shot and shot, and I finally took him hunting. He had a doe pass by at 15yrds and never took the shot because he wasn't comfortable yet with taking a shot at a live animal. I told him that was the best thing since he wasn't ready to shoot. Your buddy is disrespectful to our sport.

You have every right to be mad, but posting here isnt going to help any... It's only giving gold to the Anti's. Posts like this only make us as hunters look bad.

I just hope maybe he learned a lesson in doing so. Maybe he now realizes this aint an easy game, and that the animal deserves more respect than that.

RE: I'm so PISSED at my buddy right now!!!

yeah...sorry i didn't mean to throw a bad light on bowhunters it just made me furious that he would do something like that. i tried to tell him that he shouldn't be hunting until he'd practiced enough to make a clean kill, and that he shouldn't be shooting at anything over thirty yards even then. this is my first year of serious bowhunting and my limit is thirty yards, i wouldn't think of trying the shot he made. but he completely ignored me, and since this didn't take place on my land i have no control over what he does. i just hope as buckmaster said that he learned a lesson from this

Yep, you should be pissed. But, that dark blood could very well be a liver hit and very well could be a dead deer. Either way I think it would be ok to slug your buddy. Sometimes you have to do that!

I have an ex father in law that was just like the friend you mention. He got a new Hoyt Havotec and new arrows and montec broadheads. He also got a climber stand and felt he didn't need to practice with any of it. I tracked 3 bucks that we never found and finally got fed up with him. He would never tune or shoot his hunting setup and always had an excuse. I also helped him out of a climbing stand snafu that could have ended badly.

As much as I loathe him for his hunting ethics, I did love hunting with him and sharing time. The key now is to use this situation to validate the importance of shooting regularly, practicing with hunting arrows and taking ethical shots. Hopefully your friend will realize the importance of responsible hunting after this experience.

No excuse for being lazy, I understand not spending alot of money on something you might not even like, one cannot expect the same type of commitment and attention to detail of another as we are with our own hunting style. As bowhunters we value every aspect of our loved tradition and the game we seek. Only thru teaching and hands on experience can one learn ethics.

I'd be pissed too. I've been in that situation b4 and have helped a friend of a friend track deer, ok 2. Both were found but it was alot of work. I told the guy this yr that if I didn't see him shoot broadheads at a target to verify his poi I would be back at camp sleepin when he was trackin. Same crap this yr and I said I would camp elsewhere. Now the whole camp is pissed at him.
I refuse to hunt with SLOBS

I agree with 2 lunger it could be a liver hit, especially if you did not find any bits of stomach contents. But you have every right to be mad.

Your buddy needs a good Ole punter style kick to his boys. And while he's rolling around on the ground, moaning andteary eyed, trying to figure out if his cods are busted or his stomach is ruptured, you could use that momentto calmly explain to him that the deep, dull, pain he's feeling betweenhis solarplex and acorns is highly likely, very similar to the pain that doe had to endure for hours, if not days, before she's finally relieved by her own death.

Perhaps then, he'd moreappreciate any future animal he decides to take. Just a thought..............

RE: I'm so PISSED at my buddy right now!!!

people do it every year....my younger brother just got a bow 2 weeks ago and he just sighted it in 2 days ago. I would not let him do anything until we had it tuned and set up with the correct arrows. He is shooting well at 20 yds and that will be his max this year. He will shoot daily through out the season. I feel he will be able to at least make good decisions on when to shoot.

Yeah like everyone else has said, you should be pissed. It's this crap that makes farmers and land owners not let ethical hunter hunt. He really needs his ass chewed. Don't let him hunt without practicing, I know it's not your duty to do that, but it needs to be done.

RE: I'm so PISSED at my buddy right now!!!

Definately have a right to be mad. I am.. A friend of mine is trying to get into bowhunting this year and I flat out told him I wasn't gonna let him hunt until he can shoot comfortably from 20, consistantly. He was fine with that. That stinks that you have to treat your friend like that, but, hey, he deserves any whooping that you give him! Give him one for me too, will ya?
Hopefully, like others have said, he learns from this and becomes smarter and a better shooter because of it.
We all have probably lost a deer or two, but what he did was just stupid...
Good luck!!

RE: I'm so PISSED at my buddy right now!!!

I'd be pissed as well and doubt I'd ever take him hunting unless he changed his ways for the better fast. Like most have already pointed out, this happens more than I care think about. I see the same thing with guys getting into turkey hunting. They figure it just a shotgun so they should be good. Doing it with a shotgun isn’t nearly as bad with a bow. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s OK to not pattern shotgun! We as hunters should ALWAYS take the time to sight our bows, shotgun and rifles properly every year to ensure we make the most ethical kill we can.

Other thing I’d like to ask or state, what the hell is your buddy thinking about taking a 45 yard shot? Even though I’ve been bow hunting for over 20+ years and a staff 3D shooter for two different store, I wouldn’t take a 45 yard shot. Well I take that back, I did take one shot over 40 yards (42 to be exact). But a my resume as an hunter/archer, my confidence in my shooting plus knowing how to read deer mood is the only reason I took the shot which was a doubled lung and recovered within 40 yards of the hit. I’m sorry but I feel your buddy has no right to enter the woods until he has taken a Bowhunters Education Class. If he did already, he needs to take it again.

Good Luck & Hunt Safe

Could be worse. The guy could have gotten lucky and killed the doe with a perfect shot. At least only one deer is going to suffer for him to learn his lesson. If he made the shot, he could have written the next 2 or 3 bad shots off. "Just bad luck" he would say to himself.

RE: I'm so PISSED at my buddy right now!!!

Run an archery shop for a few years. You wouldn't believe how many of these idiots are running around out there and calling themselves hunters.

It baffles me how many people don't even know the word "tune".

I had one guy blame the slick tricks I sold him. He claimed that he made a "perfect double lung shot" then explained that when he shot the deer it hunchedup like apissed off catand walked away. I told him he gut shot it and maybe gotliver at best. Of course he argued with me and purchased some mechanicals.

Even worse is fathers will bring their 10-ish year old sons in to the shop a week or two before the season starts to get a bow set up. When I explain to them that he needs to sit out this season and practice a lot before he tries to hunt the fathers are quick to say "Oh, he's going with me openeing day".

You can't fix stupid!
