Sunday Hunting in PA - HB 779 PLEASE READ
It looks like the Sunday hunting is getting some attention again. Kicking off with a campaign to support Sunday Hunting.
Here are some benefits outlined in the article..and below are some links. I, for one, support that Sunday hunting be allowed............ 1) Sunday hunting is permitted in 40 states including Ohio, New York, West Virginia, and Maryland 2) This is the last surviving Blue Law. PA had a Blue Law that made Fishing illegal on Sunday, however it was repealed in 1937 ! 3) According to the recent study by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, time constraints appear to be the biggest barrier to increasing hunting participation. Hunting license sales have fallen 28% in Pennsylvania from 1981 to 2007. Projections indicate another 24% decline by 2025. By allowing Sunday hunting, it would be a major step to address the problem in PA. 4) By allowing Sunday hunting, it would provide a huge financial impact. A study by the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee concluded that 5,300 jobs would be added. 5) In addition, if PA permitted Sunday Hunting the financial impact would be $629 million annually ! Currently Govenor Ed Rendell and the Pennsylvania Federation of SPortsmand Clubs currently are against Sunday Hunting but are slowly considering some options. I like that it gives the working man an extra day to hunt. Between working and family most people only have Saturdays

I WANT SUNDAY HUNTING. It's as simple as that. Because of my Dad's job and my enrollment in school the number one deterrant for time in this woods is the issure of time constraints. Many blue collar workers cannot take off the number of days they want to just to hunt. By allowing Sunday hunting thousands more people would be eligible to spend more time in the woods.

With some working on Saturdays and kids being more active in sports like soccer, Sunday hunting only makes sense. What I don't understand is those that oppose it, yet travel west to hunt elk or deer....but hunt Sunday's there.

There are only 7 states that don't allow Sunday hunting, and all of them are onthe upper east coast. Pa needs to wake up!![:'(][:'(]

The first place you'll see it implemented is with Spring Gobbler. Mark my words right now, spring gobbler.
My buddy Ray Smith, former owner of River Valley Game Calls, now the National Director for the NWTF speaks in front of the PGC often. His one speech was on Sunday hunting and afterwards several PGC higer ups as well as our state Reps asked Ray for a copy of his speech. They couldn't agree more than to allow Sunday hunting for at least spring gobblers. He included, "why on earth would an out of state hunter by a PA nonresident license to hunt turkeys in this state when all he can hunt is Saturday and only to noon. At least Sunday would afford the guy a second day and perhaps non resident sales would increase". Of course, revenue for the PGC was/is a major concern. The one major reason that law (no Sunday hunting) has been enforced is farmers DO NOT want Sunday hunting. They claim the deer need a day of rest from being pushed to death, as anyone that hunts PA knows. Many picketed the possible allowance claiming they will close their farms to hunting all together if Sunday hunting was allowed. Farmers and anti's won and Sunday hunting is still not allowed. Ray's claim, why punish thousands upon thousand of public land hunters because some farmers don't want hunting on their lands. If these farmers don't want Sunday hunting they can tell their permission that NO Sunday hunting. They can regulate their own land to their needs. They claim they need a day that no guns are being fired. BS, the rifle season is 2 weeks long, that's 2 Sundays. It's a big joke. But again, you watch, turkeys first to open the door. |

Rob is right, I have heard the arguement about landowners not approving of Sunday hunting....and thats a bunch of garbage. As Rob stated, they own the land, they regulate it, however if they don't allow Sunday hunting so be it. Its amazing how many states in the Midwest have Sunday hunting and many of those lands are farm land....
There are more reasons to post your land than Sunday Hunting......liability being one of them. I would think this will be an ease in type of regulation and it does make sense for them to start with Turkey Season. However it is hard to ignore a financial impact to the Commonwealth of $629 million...the small part of non-residents that would buy a turkey tag is a small percentage of that number.:eek: |

Is there any info pertaining to the number of hunters in the feildon a day by day basis? Seriously, if the farmers want to use the "deer need a day off" agruement, why not pick a day (like Monday) when few hunters are hunting? Let's face it, the weekends are when peoplecan and do hunt! The inability to hunt on Sundays makes absolutely no sense to me! Jeff (GMMAT), what is the reasoning behind noSunday hunting in N. Carolina? |

I agree, the day of rest is a joke...heck farmers work 7 days a week !! They don't even practice what they preach on that arguement. I have also heard that some of said that is the day they want to enjoy their land. Personally I have never heard one farmer say either of the two. Either you can hunt or not...no restrictions from my experience

I am all for Sunday hunting in PA, so please don't take this as an argument against the original post, but how will Sunday hunting create 5,300 jobs and increase revenue as much as stated? How are those estimates projected? I just don't see how adding a single day of hunting throughout the seasons would have that much of a financial and job related impact.
With that said I would love for them to open Sundays. I'm a 9-5er with a family so my time in the woods is precious and limited. |

This is just my guess as to the jobs/revenue calculation. They take the number of current huntable days and the revenue generated from that. (probably from surveying little stores, restaurants, & places to buy gear) This gives a revenue per day. Now add 17 more Sundays (7 archery, 2 rifle, 3 late season, 5 spring gobbler) And there’s your added revenue. As for the added jobs…not sure. Maybe they survey how many service industry jobs it takes to care for the number of hunters for that number of days, and then extrapolate that out too. I can’t see it PHYSICALLY adding jobs, but it would certainly make those places dependant on hunter traffic do much better.

Yea. But they may have a restriciton that you need a certain % of your sales to be from food. I'm not sure.
A few years back they also opened up beer distributors for sunday sales as well. |

Think about all of the money this state sucks in from allowing gambling (Pa Lottery) and the purchase of alcohol (Taxes). |

Money speaks which is why the hunting and fishing industry will never allow the liberal extremists to shut our sports down. That said, we still have to be vocal and help.
As far as those who argue people should be in church and with their families on Sunday, yada, yada, yada. Its a bunch of horse crud. The same thing with sunday alcohol sales laws. I can count a number of Sundays where I went to church, spent time with my family and slipped in a 2 hour evening hunt. God still loves me and so does my family. Heck, they've even let me enjoy a beer or two on Sunday and spend time with them! |

I'm for it. I don't have alot a time to hunt this year because of the new job. Sunday hunting would be a plus to me. I know it wouldn't happen for this season or even next, but I still support it.
