If you dont find it suitable to lug around with you while hunting... I would atleast think about keeping it around for camping, BBQ, shooting, picnic, etc.....?? Not a bad thing to have on hand at anytime?!?

You don't need one. The lumps will disappear after a couple days. Just make sure you swat all those misquitos that have that West Nile virus tag on them.[&:]

Look, you're a grown boy. You don't want to buy one then don't. Me, if someone told me the misquitos were out in full force.... I'd take both of mine for a half day hunt.:)

Wow... There are a lot of respectable hunters on here recommending it. Honestly, I'm surprised. You guys have convinced me! Although - I was not pre-disposed to hate it;)

I would not care if you are wearing clothes covering every square inch of your flesh. You would not last 1/2 hr morning or evening hunt here in Louisiana without it. After these hurricanes, I have to wear repellant or use the Thermacell just to practice for a half hour in my front yard. (and that is constantly moving around) You would never be able to sit still in a stand without it here. Just my experience.

I have one and have used it many times. Used it up in Canada bear hunting.. Didn't get a bear.. Used it in IL deer hunting, got a deer.. Did it make a difference, who knows.. But it did keep me from being eaten alive.. I don't use it all that much but if I hunt deer early near a pond or where there are a ton of skeeters then I will..

OH, and I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet or not but they have started making a "holder" for them now... It straps in and you can strap it to ya.. I bought one last week, have not used it yet though..

Hey Gmmat. I would buy it at half price. I need one for the wife. Honestly I've been in the deer woods since aug 25 and the skeeters are thick. Its been warm too so I don't wanna dress too warm. They eat me through my clothes[:@]
Get a thermacell and enjoy being skeeter free. Even if you only use it every now and then.

RE: *&$%# Thermacell.....&#^#%

Well Jeff, all I can say is it works. I was skeptical at first but I broke down and bought one. Not really for deer hunting as we don't have that many around when we open. (Oct. 1st) but for my other summer hunts I've used it. Now.....for the bad points of it. In a slight breeze if your not down wind of it you will get bitten, not as much as without it all together but some of the more stubborn guys make it to you. Mosquitoes really can't fly in anything more than 7mph winds but in real slight winds they can and if yousitting up wind of the Thermacell you might get bit some.

I'd recommend it to any hunter or even if you spend summer evenings outside on your deck or patio....that's when I use mine the most. I even bought the lantern type thatglow like a globe for my outdoor table sets. They look a whole lot better than the regularThermacell and they even have a auto shut off if they are knocked over.

Here is what it looks like.

So what did everyone do before these things were invented?

While yes I have one, maybe I am less prone to fear the skeeters since their bites don’t have any effect on me. The buzzing in the ears is annoying but you get used to it. I really hate when they go in my eyes though.

:DYea that was a bit of a shocker the 1st time I used mine. Sitting in the dark dead calm of the spring turkey woods….CLICK! WTF!
I tucked it up under my jacket to light after that.

Loud is relative. The noise isn't really loud but you push that button at dark:30 in the morning in a silent woodlot and it seems like a howitzer just went off. I just start mine when I leave the truck. I have the holster for it and leave that hanging on my fanny pack. I've never had a problem doing that. Actually I think it helps. When I reach my stand the pad is already warmed up and working. I don't have to wait 5 minutes for it to become effective. Jeff, you have my address, just mail it when you're done. i'll mail you a check for what you paid if you decide not to keep it.

I guess the starting it early trick will work. Will it "go out" if it's placed lightly in my fanny pack.....or packed llosely? I suppose I can carry it all the way to stand.....then figure a way to get it up there without going out?????

Never used one. Are they prone to go "out" when transported? Can you muffle it to light?

Thanks.

RE: *&$%# Thermacell.....&#^#%

I don't know if it will stay lit in a fanny pack due to its need for oxygen. Then there is also the heat to be considered. Try what rybo suggested, Well, nevermind that... I don't imagine you'll be wearing a jacket! The noise isn't that offensive. i'd say just light it when you get in stand. The deer will soon forget if they do hear it.....maybe.

nchawkeye 09-12-2008 07:44 AM

RE: *&$%# Thermacell.....&#^#%

It needs to be flat to stay lit...Mine is strapped to my climber, I get up the tree and then light it...
There is a glass in the back that lets you look into it to see if it's lit, or you can light it and wait a few minutes and see if the blue pad is getting hot...

RE: *&$%# Thermacell.....&#^#%

Here is another hint with your thermacell. Turn it ON and let it sit for about TWO minutes then press the igniter button. I have handed mine to guys, they turn it on and click that button like hell. It needs to get the propane flowing. Also look down the end of it and when you see it start to glow it is lit. You will also hear a little "pop" when it ignites. DO NOT leave one running in your truck by your windshield. It stains the crap out of the glass.

Shannon Bug Tamer, no replaceable pads. They are high initial cost, but work. I have a thermacell also, and do carry it occasionally when things are really tough, but mostly just use the bug suit for early season.

I wouldn't I bought one andused it once..they smell so bad I never took it back out. Might be ok for the back-yard or to watch fire-works but wouldn't trust it in the deer woods.

These skeeters here will eat you and sell your bones for research. I can't beieve I almost didn't buy one.

NOW....the outfitter asks me if I brought my snake boots. SON OF A BITCH!

And there's bears here.....and he's got 'em on game cam. Says they LOVE the peanuts....and (barring a wind shift), that's where I'm hunting, tomorrow. I asked if he was taking me to my stand.

No.

Beteen the snakes and the bears, sounds like the need for an assault rifle to accompany you to the stand is in order.....just don't tell Fran.

As far as the skeeters, I once hunted early season in Alabama where they made a full frontal attack on me and as they were dragging me to the ground I heard them talking. One said to the other "letstake him (me) down to the lake and eat him where it is nice and cool, but the other replied "no, cause if we do the big ones will eat him instead."

That makes sense.[8D]

I could only imagine if a coons attitude was put into a bears body...you talk about a mean SOB. Coon hounds would have more than a handful lol.

I will not be taking mine out in the woods with me ever again, unless the wind is blowing out into a cut field. The thing worked great for keeping the bugs away, but I am 99% sure I got busted because of it. Like an earlier poster said, If I can smell it! She came right into me and as soon as she got down wind, her nose went up and she looked right at me then bolted.
