How far will you go?
DTs thread has got me thinkinga bit (which is painful I'll admit:D) How far are you willing to go to stop a poacher(s)? What tactics have you done or currently utilize to keep trespassers/poachers off your land?I don't see a right or wrong answer with this one, and this is not meant to stir the pot - but rather an idea board for others to see.

RE: How far will you go?
If I didn't live two hours away from my hunting grounds I would randomly stop and check for those S.O.B.'s. Before work, lunch breaks, after work... it doesn't matter. We've had a few over the last two years at the camp. Severaly hundred posted signs on 200 acres and gates. You think it would be enough? Nope... they just drive through the wire gate. Can't wait till we get a 3" steel tube gate with cameras all around.
As far as me in the stand, same thing applies as rob and GMAT, camera phone, license plate picture, and a call to the appropriate authorities. Happens again? Maybe he'll "accidentally" driver over a nail or two. |
RE: How far will you go?
I find it funny that most of the folks that advocate physical violence just assume that they will be able to beat the hell out of the trespasser/lawbreaker. Most of the bad people I use to know were bad people and, from some of the pictures I have seen here, would not be getting their ass kicked by many of you here. As has been stated, let Law Enforcement handle these situations. Why risk a long hospital stay, or worse, needlessly?

Bruce.....true story I tell here, a lot....
We had a Project Manager who was having issues with a grading sub....and the sub got IRATE with him on the phone. The PM is a quiet guy....but one you wouldn't wanna stir up (ifyaknowwhatimean). Anyways...the sub starts telling him he's gonna come up here and kick his ass all over the lot. While on speaker phone, our PM listens and lets the guy go for a while.....then our guy says.....".....wait....wait...wait....a minute. WHAT do you think 'I'M" gonna be doing whilst you're whippin' my ass?" ;) |
RE: How far will you go?
I have no tolerance for poaching; if I witness it, I am calling the authorities.
as for tresspassers.. warn tresspassor once if its my land, call land owners if its someone elses land, call authorities if its a repeated incident. |

RE: How far will you go?
What am I going to do to stop poachers? Not much.
If I catch them in the act and can record them breaking the law or get a picture I will and let the law do its thing. If someone steals my stand, I won't be happy, but that is why I wait for the $80 hang ons to go on sale for $30 at the end of the year at D-icks. I've worked very hard to put myself into a position where losing a trail camera or treestand or whatever isn't going to create a major set back. I also don't leave anything in the woods I'm not afraid to lose. I protect my stuff as much as I can, but if somebody really wants it, they will get it. If I can catch them doing it, I'll report it. If they try to hurt me, I'll give as good as I get, but that is an absolute last resort. I'm no good to my wife and kid if I'm not around. |

RE: How far will you go?
I guess the laws in Texas are different, if you are caught on someone else's property stealing and they shoot you they will not be charged with any crimes. The law states that you have the right to protect yourself and your propertyby by use of extreme force. With that being said, I would assume things will happen differently where I live versus where some of you guys live I have been hunting for 30 years and can't recall having one thing stolen.
I do recall being with my grandfather when I was about 9 and we were in our stand hunting over a cultivated little field and while we were sitting there a fellow came along and layed down right under the fence line and commenced to watching my grandfathers field. He politely shot right in the ground within 10 feet or so of this fellow and then told him that he missed on purpose. Needless to say my grandfather never had any more poachers on his place. I guess when the law allows you to protect yourself and your property to that extent it slows the crimes down a bit. I know it still happens but I have never had that happen to me personally. If it did I would be very upset but not sure exactly how farI would go until it happens I guess, but by law I can use whatever means necessary to protect myself and/or my property. EDIT: I re-read this and I want to add something, I would not take another's life over a tree stand just because the law will allow it. I will say this though, I believe b/c the laws are the way they is whyI have never had any of my stuff stolen though. However ifsomeone messeswith my family, I will have to account for that whenI meet my maker b/c that individual will meet his early. |
RE: How far will you go?
I'll mind my own business if it really isn't affecting me. Shooting towards me or something like that. I don't know the history of those people. Are they ex cons or someone pissed off at the world. I'll avoid that. As for reporting them, then chances are without some proof, I'd have to go to court or something. That ain't worth my time either.

RE: How far will you go?
We should all be as lucky as Texas. It would be so cool to shoot someone out of your treestand. Most other places you would have to put your throwaway in his hand.
I'm betting not alot of stands go missing in TX... |
