Buck hunting tactics discussion.......Does

One thing I've learned in the last year.....is......well....let me ask instead of stating something that might not be true.

Let's say your goal is to hunt bucks, exclusively. Let's assume your season timing is pre-rut (all phases).

You have set up in an area you feel is a good travel route for bucks. You hunt there two straight sits.....and you see ONLY does. Does this change your outlook on your original assessment for this spot? Enough for you to discount the spot and move?

For the sake of this exercise....we'll also assume you're hunting new gorunds. You've studied the topo to establish the spots you think are buck travel routes....and the aforementioned has occurred (seen does on first two sits).

Your move.

I would move. You found a good doe travel route.

How often does this happen, Chris? I mean....everything SCREAMS "buck"....but you find only does there in your first couple of sits.

I won't say my wheels are turning.....just checking the air pressure in the tires.;)

id leave and come back during the seeking/chasing phases...let the area go undisturbed till then...i got a spot like that...could go sit and see a couple resident does...MAYBE a buck here and there if i was REAL lucky....but, come seeking/chasing phase, its a pretty good place to be....

ive never hunted it with corn up against it like it is this year, so i will be there early this year to test the waters...if i dont see shooters the first sit or 2, i will leave it be till late october/november...that corn aughta be standing till atleast late october so i might catch a buck in there before the seeking/chasing...but i know a few does live in the small piece of woods regularly...(yes...another spot i wont shoot a doe...

mauser....the premise is new gorunds. If you KNOW it's a doe haven....you'd naturally stay away if you were only looking to fill a buck tag (other premise is pre-rut).

Im having similar problems with alot of my stand sites....too many doe sightings for my likings. I'd move, if you aren't limited by land acreage on where you can move.

Come rut, that stand would logically become a good sit.

Good discussion. For me it would depend on how many other options were available given wind direction, recent signandproperty constraints.

If I had other options, that I could utilize with minimal effort (noise, scent etc) I would use them to 'rest' the original spot. Possibly taking a doe before moving on. This is where Jan/Feb/Mar scouting effort pays dividends with multiple options. Best case scenario.

If I didn't have other options and/or the sign washot (freshened scrapes, rubs), I would still not in-season scout. The bucks will eventually come to the does and I would hunt repetitively to be there.

If I stopped seeing deer, I would in-season scout to find out why. Worst case option.

Not too sure exactly what this means:

pre-rut (all phases).

Gotta be careful in assuming that the does will be there come rut. Food sources change.

Oh, I thought this was pre-rut.
What timeframe are we discussing?

It IS pre-rut. That's why I said what I did.
