Arrow flight question
 

Assuming you are experienceing NO fletching contact.....please tell me WHY you can get different arrow flight charecteristics by simply rotating your cock vane orientation.

Or....can/should you?

My guess:

Any arrow has different speeds at different points in its travel, be it going 20 yards or 75. If you cock the vans, they will be in different positions at different speeds, thus being acted upon differently by the air that they are flying though.

well, I've done this with carbon arrows. sometimes I'll get one that misbehaves, and I'll rotate the nock 90 degrees and it'll change how the arrow flies. It could be due to some carbon arrows having inconsistent spine or tolerances or whatever, or just nock alignment issues and it likes one position over the previous. But I've witnessed it firsthand several times.

I can't say anything in that regard about aluminum arrows though. I only use them indoors, 2613's with a 300 grain point for 3 spots. If I have one that flies funny, I junk it. No toying with it. But very rarely do I get an aluminum arrow that doesn't fly true. Maybe one or 2 every couple years out of a2 or 3batches of arrows as opposed to one or 2 junkers(sometimes more)out of a dozen carbon arrows.

i could see it if they were aluminum because they bend and stay bent so if they r bent u would change the realtion of the bend to the ground there by causing more or less spin, as far a carbons go i am not sure

It could have someting to do with the arrow having a weak side that shows up more when it is rotated to a certain direction. Be it up, down, right or left. The flex of the arrow at the shotmay be magnified when the weak side is rotated a certain way.

That's what I'm thinking. Have you ever tried "floating" your arrows, Jeff? I don't know if it helps but some swear by it. I've done it. If nothing else, it boosts my confidence.

i agree with jmbuckhunter and ducsauce...

graphite/carbon has a weak and stiff side...wether were talking fishing rods or arrows...theres ways to find it...

if you build your own arrows, you would actually be intelligant to find the weak or stiff side and mark it so you can fletch all your arrows exactly the same...instead of some cock vanes on the stiff...some on the weak...some in between etc....not sure if theres a "rule of thumb" on if you wanna shoot stiff up or down or in or out or whatnot....but ive heard of archers doing it before...and know guys that build fishing rods and fly rods have to do it...could you imagine having a 5 piece flyrod with the spine on all 5 pieces being different?? that would be a NASTY rod to try to cast and play a fish on!!

I've played with moving my cock feather around while shooting out of my Whisker Bisquit and never saw much difference in accuracy or how the arrow flew...This is with 32 inch XX-78s, 2413s and 125 Thunderheads...

Here's the situation....

I was having some cable contact issues with my arrows.....so I started shooting cock vane out.....or perpendicular to the bowstring. I later got a hicks 3D cable slide installed and alleviated the vane contact issue.

So....I rotated my cock vane....oriented "up", now.....and had to make a slight (albeit very slight) sight adjustment.

Why?

Greg (txjourneyman) fletched my arrows (a/c/c 3-49's)....and I would imagine he didn't go to the lengths you guys are discussing as far as finding the strong or weak side. I sure wouldn't have expected him to.

I was getting good flight, before. I'm getting consistant flight, now. If they weren't all fletched with the cock vane on either the strong or weak side.....how can I be getting consistant flight, now....and how did I before?

Also....why did I have to make the sight adjustment....when ALL I did was orient the cock vane, differently?

Just curious.
