How can SPEED hurt???
This has just got me thinking....
How can speed hurt in a bow, if you are comfortable with the bow, and are accurate with it??? My 2002 Hoyt MT Sport was shooting 244 f.p.s., and, I was deadly with it. It was very accurate. Well, my 2003 BowTech MightyMite was shooting a 400 grain arrow at around 300 f.p.s. The bow shoots the same, but, I am actually more accurate with it. I just hear all the comments about " Dont buy into speed hype" ect... What if someone buys the bow because it feels great, and it is a screamer? Is this buying into the speed hype. Here is a question, if you could own either a 2003 Hoyt RazorTec or a 2003 PSE Nova, which would you choose? Would you say to yourself " The RazorTec is a Hoyt speed bow, so, I won' t get it?" I just want a answer to my one question...... If you can shoot bow X which is shooting 345 f.p.s, just as well as bow Y, which is shooting 235 f.p.s. what is the downside? Saying that these bows are equally shock free in the hand shock aspect, they are both smooth, forgiving, quiet, ect. Okay, so, what I am saying is if you have the EXACT same bow in every aspect except speed, and you shoot them EXACTLY the same, but, one bow is faster, how can their be a down side??? Also another thing that alot of people are forgetting about is the people who want a fast bow so they can shoot a heavy arrow at speeds that most other bows would get with a light-medium weight arrow. I will admit that good shot placement is what kills a deer, but, KE and extra speed are there for the instance where you don' t get your perfect shot, which will happen to everyone. I just want to see what so many people have against a fast bow. It seems like since a certain company has came out, all people who shoot other brands are saying that " speed doesn' t matter" . |
RE: How can SPEED hurt???
Amen to that. Yea, what he said!!!
I agree with the increased KE helping on a bad shot. Not that I take bad shots, but once upon a time I darn near knocked a doe over when I hit her in the shoulder (she moved, I swear) with a muzzy tipped 2315 arrow going 235. Poor penetration = lost doe. My bad, but if it happens again more speed and increased energy for the same amount of pull couldn' t hurt one bit. |
RE: How can SPEED hurt???
With everything else remaining equal and with an increase of ke and speed I would opt for the increase in speed any day. I think that many bow hunters/shooters were starting to think that speed was the ultimate factor in every situation. There are so many components of bow shooting and speed is but one.
Strictly my opinion. |
RE: How can SPEED hurt???
BM I assume you are putting me into the speed hype category, the point I am trying to make is IMO it is a mistake to buy a bow strictly due to speed hype even when there are other bows that feel better to you. To me with a modern compound there is more than enough speed for any well placed shot and more than enough KE to boot. All I am saying is it is a mistake to buy a bow that does not feel good to you simply because it is FAST!!!!! Now if the fastest bow out there is also the one that feels the best and shoots the best for you, that is a bonus, but not a neccesity(the extra speed).

RE: How can SPEED hurt???
Well, I' ll readily admit that I think speed is over-hyped. Can it hurt? All else being equal...I don' t see how.
What I do see, however, is folks rushing to the pro-shops to buy this year' s latest & greatest models for that extra 10 or so fps...throwing all else to the wind. When I think of what makes a great bow, speed is pretty far down on the list. For others, it' s the be-all end-all of archery...and that' s fine really. I suppose it keeps a lot of bow manufacturers in business every year. :D What' s really sad though is when people seem to think they need some fire-belching screaching-fast bow to kill a deer. Folks were blowing through bigger critters than whitetails for many decades before Allen ever left the hardware store. Unfortunately, too many people by into the " speed is king" marketing hype every year. Every summer when someone runs into me at a 3D, sees my recurve, and asks, " Can you really kill a deer with one of those things?" , it' s saddening to me a little. It really makes me ask myself what has happened to this sport. JRW |
RE: How can SPEED hurt???
Taz,
I completly understand you. People shouldn' t buy a bow just because of speed, that is just stupid. What I am refering to is people who complain about speed no matter what the situation and how the bow feels to the hunter. |
RE: How can SPEED hurt???
I' d agree with ya 100% Buck Magnet, nothing but benefits to speed, all other things being equal. You' ll have no drawbacks, if you take the longer bow shots, say 35yds plus, you' ll have a little more room for error in range estimation, as well as a little more KE.
It' s when people think speed is more important than quiet, forgiving, woodscraft, stand placement, practice, etc, is where they run into problems. |

RE: How can SPEED hurt???
I cannot argue with that either. I will gladly take a 350 fps " speed bow" that shoots just as accurately, quietly and vibe/recoil free as a 235 fps model any day. :)
Speaking of which, do you know where I can get one of those? ;) |
RE: How can SPEED hurt???
Hey Frank,
I have one sitting in my room right now. I will let it go for a VERY good price of $999.99 Some have recorded it to actually shoot 500 grain arrows at a whopping 378 f.p.s. Now, the only thing is that I do not take any responsability for the product. Also, I must recieve payment in full before I send it out, and, all payments are final with no refunds. One more thing is that I am not able to give you the Manufacturer name, model, or any details on the set-up. So, when can I expect the money?????? :D:D:D:D |
