RE: what will become of your deer

I still need to learn how to process my own. I keep telling myself I want to learn how to do it but I keep putting it off. I'm sure the initial investment in the machines will pay off in the long run. Right now I just take my deer to a local guy that processes out of his garage. He charges me $55 and for that I get back straps, chops, steaks, roasts and burger.

I want to at least get a dehydrator this year so that I can make my own jerky.

A dehydrator is a good investment and not too expensive. You really don't have to go crazy with buying everything at once. A good cutting block, I like to have an old spare refrigerator I can put quarters in, a couple of good knives and sharpeners, sharpening steel, freezer paper, a hand grinder will do on a single deer as well. A little help is nice too, along with a beer or two. Every year you can buy something else to make the job easier.

If all goes right, I will get 3 deer this year. I have my standard license, (buck) I have applied for and got one doe tag,and today they started excepting bonus doe tags, wich i applied for, but not sure I will get one. Of courseI still have tokill these deer, orI will just be eating tag soup!Obviously the back straps will be kept for those special occations, then depending on the age, toughness of the deer, I might cut a few steaks from the shoulder/ham. The rest is used for jerky, or ground up to be made into bolagna.

He'll eventually turn into a lot of poop, after my system processes him. [8D]

I keep all my cuts and have the local IGA grind the scraps and turn them into snack sticks, summer sausage and ring bologna.

steaks, roasts, jerky, and burger. I hope to kill at least 3. 1 buck and 2 does. I have 5 tags, 2 buck and 3 doe and would love to tag out but will be very happy with 3.

we do all our own processing at home.. burger, steaks, roasts, sausage, jerky, breakfast sausage (my favorite) and what every we decide to do.. both with my bucks, elk, bear, turks and lopes.

I will have 4 buck tags this year and 2 elk tags and oneMontanadoe tag.Wife will have an elk and deer tag too. Doubt we'd ever fill them all but if we do we'll have to buy another freezer. I have a nice set up now at the house, I have two 800 lb electricalhoists which makes it nice for the elk. I really want to build a walk in cooler next year, that will be my summer project to the garage. For now I have 2 extra refridgerators for early season when its hot to store my quarters in.. Works well before butchering.

I have two land owners that let me whitetail hunt their property, then all the rest of my hunting is on public lands, i make sure they each get a nice variety box of meatseach Christmas.
