Safety Harness Question... Ascending/Descending

I 100% wear a harness when I'm up in a tree, However, I do not when I'm going up or down. And I know thats the most dangerous time. Ive usually had very safe climbs and was very carefull, but this year in my High stand, there are no limbs, nothing to break me or my fall except the ground. I get very uneasy.

Could someone give me a name as to a harness that has the belt thing that goes around the tree and hooks backnear your waist/chestas you climb? Also, what is this piece called? Linemans belt maybe??

The linemans belt is what goes around the tree and should go through 2 loops on your harness. Now there are somje newer systems that you install a rope to a limb at the top of the tree near your stand and hooked on this rope is some kind of buckle that you slide up and down the rope as you climb up and down so that you are alway atached. not for sure what it is clled.I saw it on drury outdoors dream season i think it was like season 2 or 3.

Couldnt I just make one with some quality rope and a couple carabiners?

Are you talking about climbers or lock on /ladder stands?

Tie a length of double braid rope to thetree above the stand and secure it to the bottom justto keep it near the treebut do not make it taught, there needs to bejust a slight bit of"slack" in it.

Then tie a prussic knot to the length of rope.

Attach the strap of your safety harness to this prussic knot with a carabiner. It will slide up and down the rope but instantly tightens up should you fall.

Or you can just buy a "treestand life line" from hunters safety system that has all of this already tied and ready to go. Click to watch the video to see how this system works.

I just use the rope that came with my Lone Wolf stand on my SeatO Pants harness.

Really makes it nice when hanging stands.

Look ma,no hands.

A linemans belt is designed to go around the tree and atach to you waist on each side of your harness. It is designed to catch you if you fall but allows you to lean against the belt when installing steps, ladders, lock ons etc...

This guy is using a linemans belt once he gets to the top of the pole.

Edit: So is TFOX in the tree.

My Gorilla safety harness is designed with a climbing aid that wraps around the tree allowing me to be able to climb without the fear of hitting the ground.

I've used my HSS linemans belt when hanging stands and it is great. The only safe way to do it IMO. Keeps you strapped to the tree and your hands free.

Aaron.

I have an extra Summit climbing system that you can use for a lock-on. You hook up at the base of your tree.....and stay hooked up the entire time. You're welcome to use it all season.

I just got the HSS vest...it is awesome!! I used the linemans belt last weekend to put some hang-ons on and I was able to use both my hands to put it up. HSS is the best vest out there!

I have the same thing. made it from rope i got at lowes. one thing it will not work if you use a ladder because the bass sets so far from the bottem of tree.

There is also a retractable line that works like a seat belt in your car you can use... I can remember the name of it... They make a three foot line for sitting in your stand (I bought one to try this year) and a 20 foot line to keep hooked to you on the climb down.

I like the idea, have you used yours Jeff? Does it allow you to freely climb? Or do you have to hand guide the prusick knot as you go up to keep it from "catching"?

It's exactlythe same thing that I linked to in the HSS lifeline and the directions I outlined for you for the home made version.

A long length of rope tied to the tree above your stand and at the bottom of your stand. You hook into the prussic knot and slide it up or down as you are climbing up and down the ladder. It really doesn't get any easier than this.

A linemans belt is used while hanging stands or taking them down not for climbing up and down the ladders while hunting.

I use mine with LW climbing sticks and screw in tree steps also.
