how much money do we waste
ok i have been ordering my gear for the year. it comes to around 2000. i wish it was 4000 so i had everything i wanted.
But how much money do you guys think we spend on stuff we do not need. I figured i would get a range finder i am thinking it will wait till next year. I did not need it last year why do i this year. I think it would help since alot of my hunting will be on public land moving around in a ground blind. There are a few other things i did not really need. i did not need 100s worht of camo for warm weather when i could have done it for 50. How much money do you guys spend on stuff you do not need |
RE: how much money do we waste
Most of what I have I don't technically need. However, it sure makes hunting easier and more comfortable. I believe it's important to save some money, give some and blow some. I try to balance those three, so I never feel guilty about getting new gear.
Pouring money into this hobby keeps me from going nuts until the season gets here.:) |
RE: how much money do we waste
Alot of money spent. But I look at it as an investment. Especially since everything is going up in price. Someday I'll be able to pass it down to my son. So I have no regrets in what I buy and I'm sure I'll buy more.

RE: how much money do we waste
Well...I'm on the other end...I'll be 53 next week...My bow is over 15 years old and I bought it used for $200...It fits me perfectlly because I'm a finger shooter, have no desire to use a release and most of the major manufacturest don't even make a finger bow anymore...So, this year I bought a dozen 2413s and a pack of replacement blades for my Muzzys and Thunderheads, I'm ready to hunt...
I gun hunt as well...My .243 is 28 years old...:D |
RE: how much money do we waste
Hunters spend billions every year and not a single one of those dollars was spent on a need. Go into a Cabelas and nothing in there is a need.
If we stopped hunting we could literally eat filet minjon and lobster every day of our lives until we were dead with the money we didn't spend on a "want". But I would rather die thanquit telling myself (and my wife) thatI "need" to spend more money on hunting. |
RE: how much money do we waste
I don't want to think about it...
I've made a couple big purchases... New bow. New truck. There's almost 20k so far this year. [&:] |
RE: how much money do we waste
Not this guy. I laugh at new toys when they come out. Like people weren't doin it for years before all this new crap hit the shelves. The tree-monkey swingin stand, that bleat can swing thingy, new camo every single year, the newest bows every single year, why the heck would you NEED that? You don't.

RE: how much money do we waste
Well...lets see,
$80 on anchor sight last month, This month: $100 for 12 GT XT Hunter arrows, $2 cat whiskers. Today: $90 for Ripcord drop away rest and $60 for Morell bag target. What next month and the month after that holds.....Priceless. Why oh why am I blessed with this addiction??Hard to believe my wife hasn't left me yet. |
RE: how much money do we waste
I dont waste any money, I hunt with the bare mins, old camo, old treestands, no need fo rthe new crap.

RE: how much money do we waste
I try and prioritize my spending. I think back as to what I could need this year by thinking aboutwhat really bugging me or didn't work out in seasons past.I tend not to go into huge spending sprees, but if I add it all up, I spend a pretty substantial amount on hunting.

How much money do you guys spend on stuff you do not need ;) |
RE: how much money do we waste
Not much anymore. Eventually the initial investments should pay for themselves and the cost per season be very low.
I don't consider an education wasteful unless learning isn't a part of it. |
RE: how much money do we waste
My biggest purchases the last couple of years have been on clothing and now that I feel I am very well set for quite some time.I look hard for sales and will delay purchases until I can buy some thing right. You guys would be amazed at how little I spent for some of the excellent clothing I have.

RE: how much money do we waste
If I am going to shell out hard earned cash for something, I am dang sure going to do my best to put it to use. That’s all the justification I ‘need’. I typically don’t waste money on something just to have the latest and greatest. I buy when something is wearing out, when there is a functional gap that needs filled, or when a better product truly does come along.

RE: how much money do we waste
Not nearly as much as some. My camo is old but still good yet. My bow is 13 years old, still plenty good enough yet. Arrows are by far the most I spend on archery/hunting stuff. Actually I should take that back. I've bought 3 trail cams the last 2 years totaling $1500.00. I won't be buying another one of these for hopefully along time.

RE: how much money do we waste
Not as much anymore. I did buy a half dozen new arrows for hunting season.
GT Exp Hunters= $30 Broadheads = $30 Treestands (3) = $200 usually I buy them on clearance at the end of the season but I got a good deal on stands and sticks this season. __________________________________________________ ____________ Everything above the line I didn't technically need but it is stuffI will get a lot of use out of and not stuff I buy every season.(I get old arrows refletched and replacemt blades more often than new stuff). NC license = $140 VA license = $ 90 Base Permit = $25 Hunt Club dues #1 = $300 " " " #2 = $230 Gas & Tolls = ????? Wow that added up quickly $1045 + gas & tolls & groceries, easily $1500 total. :D This post will self destruct in 10 seconds. :D |
RE: how much money do we waste
First of all, I don't consider spending money on the #1 thing I like the most, to be a waste of money. Over the years I've spent very little on stuff that I didn't need. Actually, I went for years with less than I needed because of financial reasons. Now that money isn't a worry for me any more, I still hunt with just the basics......11 year old bow, aluminum arrows, Great Ultimate Camo!, $20 binos and a 15 year old grunt call. I did buy 4 LW Alpha hang-ons, but I don't consider my safety to be wasteful.

I dont care to chat about it this year.[:@]

RE: how much money do we waste
now a real hunter is one who cares about the deer
When in ky i feed there deer 100 pounds a week easy some week 150 or 200 I seen 18 deer in my back yard at one time. Even in the off season i had corn out ORIGINAL: DropTine249 Anymore- I buy only things I need. Stands, spikes and climbing sticks eat up alot of money. In the offseason- keeping 6 feeders loaded isnt cheap, either. However, I never think twice about spending money on something that benefits the wildlife, even if they have plenty of food readily available, already. |
RE: how much money do we waste
We all spend a lot but getting the goodies is a big part of the fun!!!
I try to keep much of it under the radar from the wife though! |

RE: how much money do we waste
Im 20 minutes from Cabelas and have made more trips than I would like to admit there this year. :D Hunting is what I enjoy the most so I dont really look into what I am spending. I dont go crazy but if there is something I want or actually need I go and get it. This year I cut down on golf and golfing supplies to spend alittle more on my hunting needs. I guess I NEEDED quite a few things.

Not much anymore. I try to spend only on necessities and save the rest for trips out of state.

RE: how much money do we waste
Dang!! I just saw the weekly sales flier for academy and there are two things that I "have to have".... I am gonna have to hide the credit card bill at the end of the month...
|
RE: how much money do we waste
One thing thats helped me is getting a Bass Pro Shop credit card. I use it to pay for everything and I pay it off every month. In the last six months I bought a spott hog sight, a bitzenburger jig, Nikon Prostaff 550 rangefinder, a Garmin GPS and a pair of binoculars and I only used about $50 of my own money.

RE: how much money do we waste
I usually don't spend a ton on gear as I'm pretty much set on everything a fellow might need. However, this year was an exception [8D] I'm not able to go out of state this year b/c we just had a baby and didn't want to be gone so I spent that money on gear... I've spent over $1,000 on camo alone [:-]Then again, I hadn't bought much camo in ten years and probably won't for another ten.
I enjoy getting new "stuff".. It's all part of the fun for me. |
