I hunt a lot of small funnels around housing developments, 10 20 acres tops. These deer move in and out of these areas fairly frequently dependent on the pressure that given day. So alot of times I climb up and take my chances not knowing what's coming out that day.

Completely "naked", this year. I pulled my cam, yesterday, just so I would remain that way. I don't wanna know, now. I'm gonna hunt it just like I did last year (when I did know).....only smarter.

I have had the luxury of living in some states wheremost ofmy evenings from the end of July to opening day of bowseason were spent watching fence rows, bean, corn or alfalfa fields, and would pretty much know what the area held befor season came in, yet ever now and then a big one would pop up I had never seen befor.
Where I live now is a differnt story. Mostly jack pines and scattered hardwoods for hundereds of miles. Dont have the luxury of knowing the deer by name any more, you hunt good buck sign. All 3 of the big deer I have taged here, I never seen befor I started hunting them, just hunting good buck sign. |

I hunt with my boxer briefs on... No clue whats out there until I finally see it then I scout the one I like.

Im gonna do it this year! I am heading to Maryland naked! I think it will be fun! Definatly something new for a change!

i have seen a few spikes and a 11 point
last year i missed two bucks both i saw once when i missed them ORIGINAL: virginiashadow Who here hunts for bucks not knowing what is out and about in the areas they hunt? I mean not actually seeing the bucks they hunt in daytime hours? I would say that all but one buck that I have killed over the years, I have not seen before the season....and it was luck I saw him on a field one night, then two nights. I then killed the small 7 point the first week of season 200 yards from the field, as he was transitioning in to feed. I hunt on a public military base and we cannot hang trail cams, and on many occasions cannot scout certain areas in the off-season because they are closed down due to military training. I have to learn new areas each year and their basic patterns just to keep up with the deer and rapidly changing hunting areas. Alot of these trail cam threads have me thinking that I am at a severe disadvantage not knowing which bucks frequent what areas on the grounds I hunt. Does anyone else hunt "naked"? |

It can be really challenging hunting new places outside of the rut. Sometimes I go 5-6 hunts before I see a deer. It can get discouraging but you have to keep going.

Brett, Its always a good feeling to "sense" where the big guys are holding out. You can get this sense just about anywhere in big woods where you see trails, scrapes, rubs, etc. For the first few years of getting back into hunting I did this. I rarely scouted, and used my climber on the first straight poplar that I can find tht "feels" right. Killed a few deer this way. I believe its within our humnan instinct to hunt (for some of us), others would not know it if they walked past a rub or droppings on the ground.
By the way, its not a good idea hunting naked with a climber. Things can get caught where they should not be. |
