Gripping your bow?

Pleading ingorance as I am a new bowhunter.

Why does everyone stress the signifcance of gently holding your bow? What is it's importance? What are the ramifications of over squeezing the bow? Any other recommendations for a new bow hunter with a hand-me-down?
