Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
So I was setting up a new sight tonight, and got to thinking, I usually have shot w/ both eyes open. I grew up shooting trap/sporting clays competitively and shooting w/ both eyes open was automatic for me. Well tonight I started shootin w/ my left eye closed (right-handed shooter) and I think it improved my grouping, but more shooting will determine this. I mostly started because I changed my set up and it was no longer comfortable to shoot w/ both eyes open.
Anyway, how do you shoot?? |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I think your supposed to have both open, but I have to have 1 closed or else it will screw up my rifle form. Rifle CLub is the BOMB>

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
Both open.
It allows more light in, thus allowing me to shoot longer. Plus, the vision in my right eye has started to slip, so much so that when I close my left, everything further out than five feet becomes blurred. |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I shoot with my left eye closed. I tried shooting both open, and I can't do it.
EDIT: I don't completely close my left eye. I "squint" my left eye so I can't see much of anything, only a bit of light can come in. And i also believe that my right eye is only slightly dominant over my left. Sometimes when I go to look at things closely I will look with my left or some times with my right. But when I look through a camera it's always with my left. Weird.[&:] |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I shoot with both open and no peep sight. Just a kisser button. Works great for me.

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I'm of the belief that if we were designed to do ANYTHING with one eye closed we would only have one to start with.
Generally a person who shoots a bit better with one eye closed on the range has an eye dominance issue. (left eye dominant shooting Rh or vice versa) That person would be better served just slightly squinting down on that dominant eye vs closing it entirely. When you shut one eye you mess up your depth perception, light gathering and balance which isn't the greatest combination of things to be taking away 20ft up in a treestand. Shooting with one eye completely shut is maybethe LAST thing I would recommend any shooter do unless they are sitting behind a scoped rifle. |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I shoot with one eye closed. Like Matt / PA said, I have eye dominance issues. I shoot right-handed but my left eye is dominant. If my left eye is open, it is impossible for me to see through my peep and line up the pins.

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
Bow, pistol, rifle, shotgun...All should be shot with both eyes open...Hopefully if you are right handed then you are also right eye dominant...

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
it just came natural to close my left eye i guess i never really tried with both eyes open but i think that would screw me up more than it would help me, i dont know
|
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I guess I am different beast, I start off with both open and close as I start concentrating .... works for me. I also recently read an article where Randy Ulmer does the same thing
|
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I even tried 10-12 shots with both eyes open today--I could see my arrow alot better. I felt more comfortable. The only problem is that I kept getting blurry images from my sights...I could not for the life of me get my eyes to adjust and focus.

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
The problem with me, is that I see two peeps, and two sights, when I have both eyes open, and I never know which ones to use!!!:D

I shoot with one eye squinted, same as if I wasshooting a rifle.

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
One eye closed for me. Always say that I am going to try both eyes open, but have yet to try it.

How do you do dove hunting with a shotgun??? |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
It doesn't make sense to me to have both eyes open and try to focus with one. You are sending too many wrong signals to your brain.

ORIGINAL: rimjob_rob It doesn't make sense to me to have both eyes open and try to focus with one. You are sending too many wrong signals to your brain. Now close the left eye, if the finger is pointed to the object then you are right eyed dominant and should shoot all weapons from your right shoulder and with both eyes open...You will naturally point the weapon at the object because the dominate eye takes over... Any good game shot with a shotgun knows this and wouldn't dream of trying to mount the gun, close one eye and try to shoot...The same goes with a bow...If you are left eye dominate and shooting a right handed bow then you are handicapping yourself, you can "get by" by closing the other eye but you will miss shots that you should have made just because you aren't shooting in the natural position... |

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
That's my point Ed...My flinters have open sights, still shoot with both eyes open...My .243 and .22 both have a scope, still shoot with both eyes open...
It helps me when shooting at moving deer to keep up with them...I don't watch them with both eyes, close one and then shoot...Maybe because I grew up as a hunter and have hunted and shot many different weapons it's just natural...I'm sure you can teach yourself to be a decent bow shot by closing one eye, but, talking about hunting deer and tracking a deer walking through and looking for that opening and how quickly you sometimes need to take the shot, you will be a better hunter by using the proper shoulder based on your dominate eye and using both eyes for the shot... |

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
I have both open until my pin is on the target then shut myleft eye for shooting and I shoot 3-d turneys all the time,I have never practiced compound with or shot a turny with anyone who kept both open other than traditional archers.
That would be hard to get used to,I have tried and find it awkward. |

RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
That's why you should know which eye is the dominate eye and shoot accordingly...
|
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
If you closed your non-dominant eye, would that eliminate any probloms with seeing things you should`nt see?
just curious |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
How do you do dove hunting with a shotgun??? I use my dominant eye. Close the left. Never seemed to hurt me;) |
RE: Shooting w/ Eyes Open?
