chewing in the treestand
i chew tobacoo and i was wondering if it was a bad idea to chew in the stand and spit on the ground or is there a certain kind of chew that i could buy to use in the stand i normally chew skoal mint and i have shot deer in the stand but never spit on the ground always in a bottle but it is always a hassle to being an extra thing out there and bring it out of the woods so for any of you who chew out there do you do it in the stand and spit on the ground swallow it or just bring a bottle out there...this is kind of a stupid question but i just dont want the time to be right and see a nice deer and have it get spooked by the smell of my chew spit thanks again

RE: chewing in the treestand
I am usually pretty tough about scent control, but every once in awhile I get in the mood for a chew. I just spit in an empty bottle. I have shot many deer with chew in my mouth. That being said, I hardly ever chew anymore, but once hunting season rolls around, I start to get the urge.

RE: chewing in the treestand
My brother chews Red Man on stand, spits on the ground, and has killed a deer every year he has chewed. Again, its a wind thing. They have spooked on his spit spots, but lots of deer just smell it even lick it. For some reason they keep coming back...

I chew Red Man and I just bring an empty bottle with me while im in the stand. I still see deer when I have a chew in.

RE: chewing in the treestand
Not a dumb question it's asked every year. (and this won't be the last for this year).
I dip Copenhagen. I don't carry a spit bottle, I've tried, I usually drop it or spill it anyway. I've never seen a negative reaction with deer under my stand in the area. Am I saying it's impossible that it would scare them of course not. But I haven't seen it. To me it's an enjoyable part of the hunt. I'm not going without it. |

RE: chewing in the treestand
I dip Garrett's Sweet Snuff. It doesn't develop alot of juice so I don't have to spit alot. Last year I spit at the base of my tree and one morning had 2 does and 2 fawns come right underneath my ladderstand (wasn't expecting them to come from behind me). They sniffed it and then went about their business. Admittedly, the result might have been different had it been a mature buck, but it's a chance I take.

All this talk brings on cravings. I had to go put one in:D

RE: chewing in the treestand
I use to dip copenhagen. Ive had a few deer spook from the smell but those came right under the tree where I had been spitting for hours. I shot a doe several years ago and the two little ones that were with her wouldnt leave. They both were directly under my stand, I spit on the button buck and hit him right in the nose. That did the trick. I dont dip anymore but regardless what you dip it is added scent and if you are trying practice good scent control then it kinda defeats the purpose. One other point to add, everytime you bend over to spit thats just extra added movement that big boy that is standing 50 yards behind you checking things out could see.

RE: chewing in the treestand
I tried chewing on my treestand once but I almost broke a tooth on the metal. lol j/k. i smoke while in my stand. have to really pay attention to the wind.

RE: chewing in the treestand
I dip in my stand and spit on the ground, I have never seen a deer spook from it in 20 yrs, however, that doesn't mean I don't spook deer that I can't see... This year will try to spit in a bottle....why take the chance?? I will see if this helps.

RE: chewing in the treestand
I quit chew Feb. 16 2006. And I can solidly say, I have had more success in the past 2 years than I ever had. Does, spikes, big deer, my sightings have increased 2 fold. I did cope for over 20 years and spit right on the ground. I used to argue up and down that it doesn't affect deer. I was wrong.

RE: chewing in the treestand
Have a friend who used to until he was busted, he says he notices a large diff. now that he does not chew in stand. According to him he says many more deer but who knows. I have an uncle who has shot deer smoking but I personally think it's a really bad idea and would never do it. It's a foreign smell and they will pick up on it.. I personally don't chew or smoke, to me its' nasty but it's your choice if ya do.. Just like hunting while doing it, if your comfortable with it or if it's "part of the hunt" then go for it I guess..
Maybeya'll need a scentlok cover for chew bottles.. ;) |
RE: chewing in the treestand
my grandpa used to chew everytime he got in the stand. Till one day he reached in his pocket pulled out his can, hit it once to pack it, looked up and there was a beautiful 10 pointer staring right at him. Bye bye deer. he said he put his lid back on and threw the can down and never chewed after that.

RE: chewing in the treestand
i chew levi garret in the stand and just spit in a bottle but i mean i have never seen a difference so idk

RE: chewing in the treestand
Quittings easy, I do it all the time. ;) Seriously I quit a couple times a year.I'm fine till like week 9-10 I hit a wall. The kicker the wife don't mind if she did it might be easier. I don't chew at the house unless cutting grass or shooting outside. Work, Hunting and Golf are a different story!

I'm fairly carefull though on when I take my dips. I won't take a dip that last 1.5 hours of light. |
RE: chewing in the treestand
Marinade it in Tinks 69and then just make a trail to your stand.:D

RE: chewing in the treestand
Do they have Skunk flavor? Could use for a cover scent.[:-]

RE: chewing in the treestand
Think about this. Every time you turn your head to spit, you signaling a deer in the vicinity of your location, if they are looking in that direction. It's got nothing to do with the smell, my opinion. I know Bro's that have killed deer with a cig in their mouth. Doesn't matter. I dip Skoal, not in the tree. Less movement I can generate, I'm thinking it's a positive.

RE: chewing in the treestand
Nearly every deer I've ever killed was killed while I had a chew in, be it Beechnut, Redman, Levi's, Southern Pride, Trophy, whatever, I've chewed nearly every time on stand for probably close to 20yrs, and had a chew in for every deer I've killed except 1!!!!

RE: chewing in the treestand
I have been a chewer/bowhunter now for 23 years. I have had a chew in my mouth for every kill. Until last year, I never thought about it, but last season I had two deer give me the slip and made me think about this. Both deer came in down wind of me, (for what it is worth I was wearing scent-loc and had taken a scent free shower within hours of this happening). The first deer came in about an hour after first light (small doe) and she came it I knew she was getting to a spot that would put her directly in path with my scent. She stopped, looked right up in the tree at me and then walked back the direction she came from. The second deer came down on the same trail and did exactly the same. So, with out a question, these deer picked up a scent they did not like. Was that scent my spit on the ground, or me? Who knows, I do know it was enought that I started carring a glass bottle with me to spit in (plastic makes too much noise). I recommendation would be, if you want to chew on the stand, take something to spit in. Why take the chance?

RE: chewing in the treestand
I chew and spit on the ground, just what i do. I saw a Primos scent eliminator commercial yesterday where they put coon urine on a cotton ball and than spray the primos scent control into a cup with the cotton ball , and 'supposedly' you can't smell the coon urine any more...???....I may have to try that to see if it works..... food for thought....make a spitter bottle w/ paper towel and scent eliminator???? we'll see.....

RE: chewing in the treestand
thanks everyone for the experiences on stand with the great thing they call chew... i think is will try both bottle and ground this year to see what i like the best. if i spook a deer spitting on the ground i will go to the bottle but if there is no spook i will for sure stay on the ground.

RE: chewing in the treestand
I am 29 and used skoal straight until May 20th of this year. I will let you know how my first season without it goes. I could not quit on my own so on that day when my little girl was born I told her she would never see me dip or smoke. You can't make the first thing you tell your only child a lie. I can guarantee that took care of the cravings that use to do me in. Good luck on quitting boys and as for the topic I do not think it spooks them but maybe on those evenings when they were not moving and they should have been.....Now I know why.
