What would you do?

I know I have a decent buck on my property.Patterned and ready to take down. but I am also taking my nephew out this youth season for his first hunt. What would you do? I forgot to mention he is 7 years old.

Let him have the good buck! Without a doubt!!! I've done it ....

RE: What would you do?

I said let him have the buck, this would really spark the interest of him. Im currently fighting to keep my focus on hunting but with no deer taken so far it gets harder. I think the look on his face when he smokes that buck will be worth it.

RE: What would you do?

I'd ask myself.....CAN he kill it?

If you think you can get him in there, clean, and either:

1. give him a LEGITIMATE opportunity to take this deer.......I'd take him in.
2. If you think your intrusion wouldn't mess it up, for YOU, then I'd take him in there.

If I thought he wasn't capable of going in there clean and getting the job done.....I honestly wouldn't risk it.

You asked.

I guess if I had a chance with the bow to bag the big guy before the youth hunt then I would. If you see the big one with your nephew let him shoot him. Take the opoutunity that presents itself. They are few and far between. Let the young guy shoot what he wants and take a ton of pictures. Congradulate him and make him want to come back next year. That's what counts.

Good luck to both of you guys.

RE: What would you do?

Now that I thought about, I have a question. Did he help scout and pattern this deer at all? Because he needs to know that hunting will not be that easy ( being put on the deer with no work). He would be into hunting for a year then realize it was a fluke or sumthing and then never hunt again.

Hang in there BT! I just checked google maps for your area and it looks like you are smack dab in the middle of some good deer country. If you are having a problem getting on land then get on your pedal bike and ride down the country roads and ask the farmers if they have somewhere for you to hunt. Offer to help them this fall with some chores or work around the farm and you may find a great place to hunt. I don't know too many that would turn down a young guy on a bicycle offering to help out in return. Make sure to send them a letter thanking them even if they say no.

If you have extra doe permits take the first one that strays inside your shooting zone. Get that first deer out of your system.

Good luck this fall

I'm not voting because my answer isn't up there but I'd say take your nephew and let him shoot the first thing that he get's a chance to shoot.

RE: What would you do?

He has helped me check the trail cams and i am constantly showing him different pics of deer asking where to place his shot. at 7 its still alittle hard to gethim o understand some of the stuff.
I'mjust afraid that if he takes this one that he will begin to get disappointed if he doesn't kill another one the next year or the year after that is just as big.

Serious question......

Can he pull enough draw weight to legally take this animal at 7yrs?

Are we talking bowhunting? I may have falsely assumed this.;)

I would put him out in a place with high traffic and then let him take the first slickhead that came by. At 7 years old, it will be difficult for him to sit there hours on end waiting for the right deer. Getting that first deer under his belt will be great for him. As he gets older, then it's time to target a certain deer or certain class of deer.

Good luck brother.

X2 A deer is what we're looking for here. If it happens to be the big one that steps out... well, if it's close enough... let him shoot it.

I got hooked by shooting a doe. At 28 years old. He'll decide if he likes it by shooting anything. Just because it has antlers won't make the choice for him.

I think a 7 yr old (that seems so young to me) would be happy with any deer...we can't hunt until we are 12 in MN.

I would justhave him shoot the first deer he gets an opportunity on.

RE: What would you do?

I'm sure he will be elated to get any deer. Like others have said, just have him shoot the first one he sees.

7 is young but missouri has two seperate weekends specifically set aside for youth under the age of 16 as long as with they are with a licensed adult.

RE: What would you do?

IMO, just get him on deer period. Make the hunt fun and make it an adventure for him. If the buck is the best way to do that, then so be it. If not, then find him another deer. Either way deer or no deer if he has fun, he'll never forget it and will want to come back.

Thanks for taking the time to get him involved. We need as many of the next generation hunting as possible.

My first deer was a doe and it ment as much to me as any buck I've ever killed, its kind of a right of passage.IMO

RE: What would you do?

I agree with gutshot because if he kills that good buck and dose not get a chance at another good buck the next years or then next couple years he will get discourges. I small buck would be like a building block and he can shoot for a bigger deer the next year. But if you see the big buck definatly let him shoot unless u want him to hate your for the rest of your life ........lol.

RE: What would you do?

I just went out and checked my trail cam thatis set up on the plot i plan on taking him on and had 20 pics of does in one day. i think his chances are good for a deer period.
I take as many kids as possible out every year. Whatever I can do to help keep the youth involved.

Take him and let him shoot what ever legaldeer he wants. If it's the big one, then even better for him.

That's THE best reply I've read here! This season will be the firstthat I have ALL 3 of my kids going out on the IL Youth Firearm hunt and they are more then welcome to take ANY deer that gives 'em a buzz. My boys are only 8 & 9 and looking for their first deer, my daughter is 13 and has raised the bar a bit more. Whatever they choose is perfectly fine with me.
