Bee Hive inside hollow of a tree

I put up a ladder stand against a dead tree on my friend's new farm last December. It was a productive spot.

I checked it this past weekend and noticed a bunch of bees coming and going from the hollow that is about chest high and only 2 foot away from where you would be standing/sitting.

I sprayed some wasp spray in it and scurried down hurriedly before being stung.

I went back last evening, and there is still lots of bees coming/going. No telling how deep the hive goes as I noticed another entry hole down lower on the trunk about 5 ft from the other one.

I know for some of you it would be easy to just move it to another tree. Unfortunately, in our country, trees big enough to support a stand of any kind are few and far between. I don't have another tree within 100 yards and this is where I need to be set up relative to trails and crops.

Any suggestions?

What kind of bees?

They weren't there when you set it up, I suppose?

If you can clog the other holes.....I'm betting there's a product (other than gasoline.....which works fine around my property on bees in the ground) that you could toss in the hollow part. If you don't get ALL their escape routes, though.....you won't accomplish what you're after.

Guess you can start hunting the hard way.

don't kill honey bees. Look in the local paper for a bee keeper he will come and get them for free.

They won't bother you if you leave them alone ,and what do you think is pollinating his crops?

They could have been there, I don't know. It was mid to late December when I set the stand up and they would have been dormant/hibernated at the time.

Yea there is a pretty big shortage of honey bees now-a-days due to disease, etc. Call a local bee keeper like Bawannajim said and they will gladly take them.

Sorry Jim...I never thought of that.

Perhaps just leaving the nest alone..??

Honey bee's are generally non-aggressive.. and there place in the world is pretty valuable.

I suggest just moving elsewhere..

I agree to have someone take them.

Honey bees are in real danger in this country ....... they are VERY beneficial to us ...... what Jimbo said is correct .... call a bee keeper

Yep, thatswhat I will do.Even if Ifound a beekeeper to remove them, I am depriving thisarea of abeneficial insect.

As I said, there really isn't an alternative tree atthis particular spot, but there are other spots.

And if I am correct in that they were there all along, I can wait and hunt this spot after it turns cold.

Thanks for the input.

Hey Mike, you guys got killer bees down there, right? Are you sure they aren't them?

I would be less worried about the bees and more worried about setting up on a dead, hollowed out tree!! [:o]

Yep, I am sure because if they were, they would of already had me.:D

I am way up north in Texas between Amarillo and Oklahoma City. Most of the Africanized bee hives they have found are way south of us.

Its a big Cottonwood. For the most part, the tree is not yet hollow orrotten, only some of the upward branches and where they connect to the top of the trunk.

Remind me of that next year when I am laid up in the hospital.;)

My thoughts exactly. But yea Id call bee keeper and have him come get them, hed be real happy that you called. We need to preserve our honey population as it is on a drastic decrease. Getting the bees out for the right bee keeper shouldnt be a problem at all. And who knows, maybe youll get some free honey in exchange. ;)

Wait until it cools off and go pull the stand. Do not kill them. We have some that just took over a trunk on our tree in the front yard. I don't know how many live there but it's got to be several thousand. The population has really grown since we first noticed them. They have never bothered us even when we mow the lawn right under the nest. Bet there is some great honey in my tree.
