I should start this off by saying I am not a guy that really gets into the "hows and whys" of a bow. But I do have a question about bow speed. I shoot a 2006 Hoyt Trykon. I have a 28" draw, shoot Easton Epic 340's with blazer vanes and a 100 gr. field tip, it is set at 70#. This past weekend I was ata 3D shoot run by Scheels at a local range. When I got done I noticed that they were set up for people to find out the speed of their bow. Let me say this, I had just completed my 40 target round (my first one in about 10 years) and was pretty happy with my shooting. I shoot alot, but just not those kind of events. So anyway I was curious. I always see people talking about 280-300 fps bows and I got to wondering what mine would shoot. I let them shoot it and to my surprise it was 234fps. Does that seem kind of low, or is that about right for the set up I have?

Like I said before I am very happy with my shooting, and do not want to change anything. I am just curious. Let me know if I left out any info that is relevent to speed.

What's your total arrow weight?

That woud be important to know.

How old is your string (You say you shoot a lot). This is somewhat a double-edged sword. Have you had your draw weight checked? Draw length checked?

It sounds low but like GMMAT said we need more info. I know that Mechdoc is shooting aroound 270fps with a Trykon at 29" with 410gr. arrows so 234 seems low unless you are pushing a much heavier arrow.

there are so many variables. i bought a 2007 tribute and was hoping to be shooting over 300. much to my suprise when i had it set up i am shooting around 285. that to me is slow for a advertised speed of close to 330. i now figure that if i buy a bow i will be loosing close to 40-50 when it is set up for me because of rigging and draw weight. you loose alot with a heavy string.

Correct me if I'm wrong butacompany can claim theirbow shoots @
300 fps andnotinclude any data on how they obtained that speed. I don't buy into the wholespeed concept. What standard do they follow
arrow weight, point weight ,draw weight, draw length, ect, ect. If there is
a standard I feel it should be printed in plainsight,other wise how does anyone really know how fast a bow shoots. Just take their word I guess.

You have to understand that bow companies publish the IBO speed of their bows, which in most cases cannot be obtained in a hunting type set up. IBO speed is calulated using a 350 grain arrow, 70lbs DW, and a 30" DL. While the 70lb DW is not a problem, the 350 grain arrow and 30" DL is a problem. I stand 6'2 and have a 29.5 DL, so you have to be a pretty big bow to get a 30" DL and DL is a super important factor concerning the speed of you bow. This is not to mention that you would have to be shooting a super light arrow setup to get it down to 350 grains, not to mention a 350 grain arrow out of a 30" DL.

With all that being said,your number does seem a little low for your set up. I would have guessed you to be in the mid 250's to low 260's. Maybe run it thru another chrono and see if you get a different reading. Or, as you said, you are happy with the way you are shooting, leave in alone and don't worry about it.

Yes, I am very happy with the way it shoots. Last year was my first year using it, and I had more confidience than I have ever had before. I killed a buck and a doe. The doe was 42 yards. I don't want to change anything with the setup, I was just curious as to what all goes into speed besides the obvious (draw weight, arrow weight, etc.). Thanks for the comments.

That does sound low. I'm shooting 250fps with a 501gr arrow from my #63lb Vectrix XL 30".
