RE: What is the smallest buck you would take?

I have high standards, I'm holding out for a3 legged, piebald, one antlered 4 point. Nothing less, nothing more.:D

I play it by ear, early season, I have higher standards. I look for a nice 8 point bigger than anything I have shot. Towards the end of the season, I play it by ear.A mature 4 point walks out, You bet Im taking the shot. I think the size all depends on the part of the country and hunting pressure. Those of us who hunt highly pressured land where I do will find anybuck over 100 a nice trophy.

Nottrying to be a pr**k or anything, but i would like to match the answers some of you guys are posting to the actual deer you end up taking by the end of season. Its easy to say "yeah, i will only take a 140+, nothing smaller" now, but what will actually be hanging on your 'meat pole' this fall. Again..not tryin to stir anything up..just pondering a bit.

It's not about horns for me so I didn't vote I shoot what ever I can get but have no problem with someone that just horn hunts as long as they don't put me down for the way I hunt.

At the moment i think i would shoot any legal buck that walked under my stand just so i can get my first buck on the ground.....then we can talk about holding out. I will not shoot a spike or fork horned deer however

The last buck I shot only had buttons. Tasted just as good though. ;)

If I don't think it's making Pope I'm not Shooting when I'm home.

Lots of Does to kill for meat!;)

Dan
While I'm definitely not holding out for a P&Y for my first buck with a bow, I have been holding out for a buck with something of a rack. I've watched many 1.5 year old spikes, forkies and small 6 points walk by so far, but I'm getting impatient. I really feel a need to break that ice with a buck, so the next halfway decent six point or better that gives me a shot is toast.[>:]

I'm definitely with you on killing lots of does to fill the freezer. I'm telling you, the does in the woods where I hunt are absolutely terrified.:D:D

The 2008-2009 "Nanny 'Nihilation" (®GMMAT-2007) continues![8D]

There is no set number, although generally it would likely go mid 120’s at least. If I think it’s 3.5 or older, I’m shooting. My “unscientific” criteria is if I look at the buck and think “shooter” then it is. Plain & simple. Where & how I am hunting can change the criteria at any time. If I head out this late season with my longbow and see any decent 8 pt, he’s likely to get an arrow sent his direction.

This is the smallest I have taken; I took this pic right before he got arrowed. Nice rack, but not a lot of meat.

145and up here right now I would take a 140 after gun season standards drop a little

RE: What is the smallest buck you would take?

I started the season with a goal of a solid 8pt. Age wasn't really an issue but I had hoped to nudge up my traditonal standards.

Passed early in the seasonon the first bucks I have ever actually " let walk ". Then sighting dropped off and in a PANIC to shoot a deer any deer I arroweda small six and I'm still very pleased. It's a tough game we play.

I tried and I will again but I wonder how many lowered their standards as the clock ticked down.

A wise man once said a "cocked bow had no conscience".

Anything legal with a bow (probably, I might change my mind when put in the situation.) With a gun it's gotta be something legal, and that makes me happy. Which for me is usually right around 110". Next year my goal may be up to 120" though, we'll see.

RE: What is the smallest buck you would take?

Each animal I would take depends on too many variables to give an answer in inches, on the ranch that I hunt we hunt for mature deer 4.5-5.5 or better is what we like to see come off the place... However, I just took a 4.5year old buck that should have been waybetter than he was, he probably wont make more than 80"..... I also passed three different 4.5 year old bucks that would go int he low 120's..... ButI know that I will have a real good chance of seeing these deer next year....We really aren't into inches on our place as we are more concerned with shooting mature deer...

I envy a lot of you guys, holding out for 140+ inch bucks. I have seen a total of 5 bucks in the last 4 years that would score over 90. Luckily I shot one of them that scored around 92-95(not real good at scoring), the others were like ghosts, here one minute and gone never to be seen again. I would shoot a 90-100 inch buck in a heartbeat.

So.....How'd you do?
Still with out!! My 130" minimum will not change though, little guys will still get a pass on my land. It's looking more and more like tag soup this year for me. Pass the salt and pepper please, tag soup doesn't have much flavor to It!!!;)

However some day I will shoot a big spike (at least 6" spikes) and a big forky (has to have big forks) and also a big 6 point just so I can put them on my wall. I haven't seen any big spikes, big forks, big 6 points that I would put on my wall yet that I've had In range.

The smallest buck I would shoot would be a 7 pointer. He'd have to have 4 points on his left beam and 3 on the right. He'd have to score between 56"-63" and be at least 1 1/2 years old.

I'm with you Greg! I'm not shooting a 1/2 year old 7 pointer regardless[8D]

Any buck on the last day, if I have yet to fill the tag. I am picky through out the year, but when it comes to tag soup or a spike, my babies are going to eat deer meat.

I shot a buck in either 99 0r 00 that was a toad. Huge bodied, 4.5 year old or older and had hvy main beams with absolutely no tine length ..Litterally no tines at all.. 2-3 inches max and was a 5x5.. So for me its not about score.. its about him being and old fellar .. Its pretty easy in my parts to see when a young 1.5 or 2.5 comes out ..body antlers all the above give him away..

I'd base my shot on age not score

RE: What is the smallest buck you would take?

10 years ago, I hammered whatever came by. Nowadays, generally speaking, around 130" and 3.5 years old is my minimum goal.

As far as inches go, I will stray from the 130" minimum under two circumstances:
1.He hasunique looking headgear, and...
2. He's at least 3.5 years old.

I would shoot a 2.5 year old or youngerif:
1. He was injured.
2. He had a unique coat (albino or piebald)
3. He was 140" or better which is possible, but not likely where I hunt.

RE: What is the smallest buck you would take?

I put 90-100 becuase I haven't killed a buck with my bow yet. Only a doe... So yes I would be proud as ever to take a 90 inch deer, judge if ya want, but I'd be proud....
