Critique my stand.
Here is my new stand location it is also marked on the map with a red dot. Do you guys think that it is too exposed? The upper part itself seems hidden enough but the ladder is kind of sticking out into the field edge. I am hunting on a corner where are cut through funnel and a field edge meet. Your thoughts please!

Looks like you like to hunt the edges! They look good! Good luck!
|
RE: Critique my stand.
Actually this is my first edge spot. This is new property and the land owner says that they funnel through here every morning and evening.
|
RE: Critique my stand.
Looks like a good tree if the deeer funnel though there. The canvas cover looks like it is doing more harm than good though.A hang-on about 5 feet higher would probably work.Maybe try making yourself some kind of cover on the back side as you wont be shooting that way anyhow.

RE: Critique my stand.
Yeah that actually is some kind of nylon curtain that came with the stand. I love the idea of being able to move my body around without being seen but i agree that it may be more hidden without it on. I'll see how it looks when season rolls around.

RE: Critique my stand.
why is your ladder out so far
|
RE: Critique my stand.
Hey dstubb.. don't take this the wrong way.. just giving you a little pointer.
I would certainly first start by ripping down that curtain.. right now.. even with all the foliage that treestand can be seen by me... and I'm in Illinois. Even without the curtain that stands a little in the open.. but you may be able to get away with it.. thats your call. As far as the ladder.. I think you are always best to hide it off any trail a deer may use.. that way the deer have less to smell. By leaving that ladder exposed to the whitetail you are just asking for a deer to come by and smell the bottom steps after you just climbed up or down. This being important even more so.. after you head home for the night.. and a monster walks by only to sniff your hands which inevitably touched the ladder. Plus.. having your ladder stick out like that only screams for a thief to come by.. if one so desires. Hide the ladder.. you'll sleep better.;) |
RE: Critique my stand.
I would get rid of that rail and netting. It will only cause you grief bowhunting out of it. Sooner or later your bottom cam is gonna wack it and throw your shot off. Or you won't even be able to get a shot off at a close deer.

RE: Critique my stand.
I'm gonna lose the curtain and the shooting rail folds up and behind. As far as someone stealing it goes that it pretty far out of the question this farm is gated and the land owner has can easily see the stand from his house. Someone would have to be really stupid to try it. I also have some magnetic leafy vines that i will be putting on the ladder to better hide it. There really isn't any good options as far as trees go around that spot. I know for a fact that it is the spot to be and that really is the perfect tree to be in. I don't think that a whitetail is going to view the scent on my ladder any differently than the path i walk in on. I wear rubber boots that are kept scent free and i wear scent free gloves at all times. I think that once the curtain is gone it will be a pretty hard to spot.

RE: Critique my stand.
do you plan on hunting it all season, it sticks out a little now, once the foliage begins to fall -- you will be a sore thumb
|
RE: Critique my stand.
You need to get higher and take some of that junk off of it, looks like a blob of #$*t up there!!:D
|
RE: Critique my stand.
Alright guys thanks for the advice. I have many other stand locations and this is the first ladder stand that i have ever put up. It was so much work to get the damn thing up and i would sure hate to take it down after all of that. Who knows maybe i'll feel energetic one evening.
|
RE: Critique my stand.
you shoot be alright it might get tough standing up to draw and everything though. i have a few similar sets on corn feilds but i mostly just gun hunt from them, i prefer to use a tall ladder stands for my bowhunting
|
RE: Critique my stand.
I would move the stand where that intersection of small woods is inbetween all the fields.
|
RE: Critique my stand.
That intersection looks good on the image but it's hardly there anymore. The land owner cleared out nearly all of the woods line directly behind his house in order to be able to view the back hayfields. Must be a really old image.
|
RE: Critique my stand.
Well in that case, nevermind.
