Are Scent Elimination Products a Crutch?

The responses to the wind related threads got me thinking.

Do hunters that use those products do things differently b/c they buy into the "forget the wind, just hunt" advertising? Examples would be hunting a stand when the wind isn't right or stopping at the gas station to fuel up on the way to the woods, etc. That's what I'mcalling a crutch.

Guys that don't use those products don't take any chances and may be more cautious and astute when it comes to odor and wind.

Interested to see what your opinions are.

I suppose they can be but I see them more as a tool that, when used correctly, can help.

X 2. I still take all the precautions, but use deer dander as another weapon in the arsonal.

I am one ofthe guys that do use the products but still don't take any chances, and I too see itas a tool, If I am on stand and had the perfect wind for that stand and 1 1/2 into thehunt the wind changes. IfI havemade every effort to be as scent free as possible and used the tools available I don't see it as a crutch, I see it as an advantage and being prepared.

I don't necessarily think they are a crutch, but I do feel that the use of them is designed to dull and/or take away a deer's #1 defense mechanism. Kind of makes it unfair IMO. Like I have said before though, my opionion is worth about as much as the lump that falls out of the east end of a west bound rat.

In my experience, Deer Dander is the real deal. I killed two bucks and saw many more using the Deer Dander. They came right to my tree with 10 yds. They were not just coming in my direction, they came into my area and then came straight to the tree where the bottle was sitting and opened. As far scent killer, it can only be a crutch if works right?? so if it's a crutch, it works.

Here is the better question - if deer have the scent detection capabilities of a blood hound, why spend a bunch of money on products that have ZERO proof they work? If they had the proof, they would be using it!

When I say "proof", I mean actual scientific data showing a particular product reduces the amount of human oder BELOW a whitetails known capacity for scent detection. This is a parts per million reason why these products don't work....

I spray my clothes will earth masking scent and they smell like dirt or acorns...That's all I know, if it works, great, if it doesn't, I guess I will never know! I know it smells like something so it has some merit to it, but I don't know if it covers up all my scent.I use it, it's only 8$ a bottle, so what.
