i wonder if i made the right move or not.
Well as some of you might remember i had knee surgery in Jan.
They cleaned up two tears in my knee. It has been better but i still have some pain when i sit with my knees bent like driving or hunting and when i walk long distance. I am now worried i am developing arthritis due to it all. I went to a spot walked it out about 1.5 miles or so round trip I noticed when i was walking my knee started to hurt. Not like before just hurt it did not lock up or nothing. what worries me is i have been popping anti inflammatorys and wonder how bad it really is. I am thinking about going back to the doctor but not sure i am willing to hear what he thinks and what he wants to do. It worries me it might cost me the season |
RE: i wonder if i made the right move or not.
Let me give you some advice from a person that has had three knee surgeries. If you continue to take anti-inflammatories, you will continue to keep having pain. Your body swells up in area to bring nutrients and things to help heal the area. If you eliminate that internal swelling all the time, you are eliminating the healing process. I am not saying let your knee swell up, but just ice it when it hurts, and occasionally use anti-inflammatories. Let the body take action.
I gave a buddy of mine the same advice I gave you above. He and I submission wrestled together and he developed some serious tendinitis in his wrists. He constantly used anti-inflammatories for years. I finally convinced him to stop the pills for 2 months and just ice afte practice. His tendinitis went away completely because his joints were finally allowed to heal. You also need to strengthen the muscles right around your knee, especially the teardrop shape muscle on the inside quad. Your hamstrings also must be strengthened to help keep you walking upright and not leaning forward, thereby placing a large amount of stress on your knee joint and not on the muscles, where most of the pressure should be placed. If you are overweight, losing 10-15 pounds can make an immediate impact on your pain levels. Hope this helps. |

a lot of times, doctors and surgeons will tell you that you NEED surgery, when in all reality, you dont. doctors said that i needed surgery on my shoulder this past fall, but i just gave shooting and baseball a break pretty much all winter, and its back to normal now. thats just one instance, i know a lot of friends and family that have been told that they needed surgery, but elected not to get it, and much better now.
whatever you decide to do i wish you the best. |
RE: i wonder if i made the right move or not.
I had the same surgery (two tears in the meniscus)in mid April08'. I was back to work mid June, 6 weeks, I work in the oilfield and am up and down stairs on drilling rigs daily. I really have had no problems, my doctor had told me that different folks heal differently but you should Be in better shape than you are describing.I would go see the doctor andjust to make sure!!!!

i do have a brace but when i walk it drops down and ends up at my foot
i thought about going to the local gym and doing some leg lifts thought that might help ORIGINAL: arrow2512 6656- do you wear a knee brase when you walk that will help out a lot .I put mine on when i know i'm going to mow the lawn or take the dog for a walk and also at walk because i walk alot there to.Also keep doing the rehab excercise that they gave you that will also help. And when you do you excercise or take long walks put a towel on your knee then rap ice around it keep it on 20 mins on 20 mins off do that for a hour it should help you at and takes some iburprophen myself i take 3 it's up to you . |

Don't get too dependant on braces if you can help it and ask about some phys. therapy! The right therapy can stengthen the muscles in the right area and do wonders.I had a tear repaired about 3 years ago and did'nt do p/t for awhile, when I finally did I could tell the difference.I'm not taking care of it now and I can tell come season changes, work up the muscles and stay on top of them!

RE: i wonder if i made the right move or not.
Jim, when I had my shoulder surgery, they told me to leave it in a sling for 5 weeks. I did what I was told. After the 5 weeks they started me on my physical therapy. My shoulder was already locked down to minimal movement. After 8 months, they took me back in to "manipulate" the shoulder. For those of you who don't know what that means, they put you under and then by forcing the arm around, tear the scar tissue that has built up. After the manipulation, I was in therapy for another 4 months.
Go to another specialist and see what they say on your knee if your not happy with the results of the first surgery. I did and was told by two different doctors that my shoulder has gotten about as good as it is ever going to get. Now I have to adapt, adjust, and overcome the hand I was dealt. |
RE: i wonder if i made the right move or not.
Jim-Ialso had shoulder surgery, but my doctor had me working out the next day he say he didn't want my shoulder getting stiff. He gave me some rubber bans to work witha green one blue one and red one , i stared out with the easier one the green then work my way up to the harder one which was the red . after 3 weaks my shoulder was realy feeling good so by the 4th weak i could go back to work on light duty.I still have a 30 percent imparment in my shoulder but there's no pain anymore thank god for that.

RE: i wonder if i made the right move or not.
Tim, I'm not trying to be cruel one bit but I think where you really need to focus is some kind of a weight loss plan. All the surgeries in the world aren't going to do squat unless you get yourself in better shape. 375lbs is a big man, thats allot of wear and tear on your knees and definitely isn't good for your ticker either. Once you start some kind of weight loss program don't get lazy and put it off. You've got to want to do it or it will never happen bud and your knee's will never be any good.
Good luck and take care of yourself, you've got allot of hunting ahead of you yet my friend!;) |
RE: i wonder if i made the right move or not.
Schultzy, I was about ready to post the same thing. Come on Tim! First goal, get down to 325. Then let us know who it feels. You might not have any pain after that 50 pound loss.
