another how's my form

I was out shooting and my son asked if he could shoot so I said ok.He hasn't shot in atleast a year.Too busy with baseball and basketball and such.I think he has been reading my form advice because I did very little with him when he started shooting. The group wasn't the best but I will take it from a 9 year old that hasn't picked up his bow in a year.;)

We might need to work on the gut and the but.:D

Do you recommend having the feet that far apart? I'm not being a smart ass I really want to know. One would think that would give a better "base." I'm usually about shoulder width apart.

RE: another how's my form

I actually like it but it might make deerstand shooting tough.

He likes a wide base, even when swinging a bat.It has worked well for him there and he even gets great weight transfer doing it.His hitting coach liked it as well.I have a friend that isa level 4 archery coach and he loves a wide stance.

So,from a target aspect,no problem with it,from a hunting one,he might need to narrow up a bit.;)

Awesome pics, Todd... sure is fun being a proud Dad, huh? :)

As far as the straight arm... I think the best I ever heard it put was by Michael Braden when he talked about having a bent arm and leaning against a fence post or door jamb. See how long you can hold the weight of your body up like that; then, straighten your arm out to a relaxed state just like it were hanging naturally at your side and see how well you can support your body weight. There's no comparison.

Very nice comparison, and if you get your forearm and wrist turned properly, along with the proper draw length, you should have no issues with arm slap.

Believe it or not,I swelled up like that when I was 8,but by the time I was 12,I was the same size I am now.[:-]

He is bigger boned than me though so he might actually turn out to be "normal" sized.[8D]

It doesn't slow him down, still the fastest kid on his all star baseball team and they call him speedy.:D

Looks good Todd. Although, what i really wana know is how's his control (pitching)coming along? Work on his follow-through after release any this summer?

I let him play and didn't do a whole lot of work with it.Just didn't want to take any chances with his arm.He is still around the plate. He is doing some pitching now as a 9 year old on a 10 year old all star team.I figure he gets enough throwing in games and warm up.His form and technique is good(not great)and I do remind him to hit his marks but not much beyond that.

How about a glove like Ozzie Smith and the power of Adam Dunn, with more consistancy? Is that more his style?[8D]

TFOX 07-21-2008 10:00 PM

RE: another how's my form

Yep,power, but content with base hitsand short/centerfield speed(better outfield glove than infield).Plays short in regular league. He played short, pitch, catch and centerfield all in 1 game.:D

But back on topic, can't wait untill he can shoot a deer with it.:)

That stance is too wide. Shoulder width is correct. Other than that, not bad.

Look at olympic archers, they are about the same width as he is.I am a shoulder width proponent as well but I don't think wider is wrong, but imo, narrower is.

I had him working on hips and grip so I did not ask him to narrow up.I try not to add too many things at once, especially with a young person.Everything else he was doing on his own.Once he has the other things going without thinking about it,I will have him try narrower to see how it works.

Granted, they are 2 different disciplines between recurve and compound but like I have already said, not ready to call it wrong just yet.;)
