ORIGINAL: mobow Tony, believe me bro, I know exactly what you're saying. But I share that same fellowship w/ the guys that I bowhunt with. And I'm not arguing in the least. But for me, honestly......if I were FORCED to hunt w/ a gun.....I wouldn't be at that camp anyway. And if I were.....it would be more frustrating than fun, taking away from all of it. Fellowship or no, if a guy isn't interested in bang stick hunting......It just wont' be fun. Trust me. ;) Don, if it was a tradition from your youth, you WOULD understand .... you would look forward to dropping them with a gun as well as a bow ....... but I understand your post for how you grew up ... |
RE: Bowhunting and gun hunting ..... a different perspective?
What PT is trying to say is some states, mostly North East states have a deep gun tradition.
Michigan is a gun hunting state, the laws are in favor for gun hunters. PA and Minnis the same IMO. For example my grandfather has hunted same woods for over 60 years, and Nov 15th is speacial to him. Just like bowhunting is speacial to us, for some Gun hunting is even more speacial do to family history;) |

In PA it is a badge of honor to be walking in the woods with just a walking stick.[:-]
It is sign that youpossess the skills & knowledgeto have all ready used your one and only buck tag.;) |
RE: Bowhunting and gun hunting ..... a different perspective?
PT, I can absolutely relate. I try to hunt just about all seasonsin my state.
Bowhunting is first on the list, but I look forward to all of the other firearms seasons as well....especially late season muzzleloader. Our 6 day shotgun season does get a little intense with the hunting pressure, but it is more about the tradition and comaraderie during this week. We have a small club of 20 guys, we hang anywhere from 15-25 bucks a year on our pole. We eat well, play cards, throw in some money for the big buck contest, and hunt hard as hell. Everyone in our club is a serious hunter, andwe're mostly family. It's no doubt somthing to look forward to come the secondweek in Dec. After that the muzzleloader season will keep you hunting right up to Jan. in some zones, and of course there is late bow and arrow. Somthing I really miss is hunting for small game. When I was younger I had awesome rabbit hounds(bonnie and clyde), and a German shorthair pointer named Zepher who would findquail in a lick. At one point at age14, I had the last add on the last page in Field and Stream magazine to take out small partys rabbit and quail hunting....just on Saturdays and not more than four hunters. After getting the dogs started on agood trail, and my grandfather would cook-em breakfast. This was great fun........until deerhunting came into the picture of course. I do have some incredible memories and traditions that I must carry on to my son(only 2). When he's a little older I'll think about a couple of hounds again. It's a great way to start-em young. |

Man, I miss deer camp. Used to hunt in Northern Michigan with the relatives every year. What a blast! I've got more stories from deer camp over the years than sea stories after 20 years in the Navy! Folks would say, "let me get this straight, you can kill six deer on your tags in Virginia, the gun season is six weeks long, and you drive all this way just to shoot one buck?" Answer was always the same. YOU BET:D! Now that Ilive onmyproperty, some friends and family will be down every year for black powder season. New tradition! Won't be the same as deer camp, but it'll be fun just the same. Bow is solitary for me. It's "my time" with nature. Gun is family and friends. I can't say I really love one more than the other. Both are special to me, for different reasons.
