RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
ORIGINAL: jmbuckhunter This guy sure was afraid of the daylight. I saw him in my subdivision 4 different times over 2 years, always after dark crossing the road or in my yard. I got this pic at 4 something in the morning behind my house. I haven't seen him for 3 years now, don't know what happened to him.

RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
ORIGINAL: GMMAT I wonder if the snow track folks would like to take a challenge and see if it's the cameras.....or the constant intrusion on the area? IMO.....when you set a trail cam up on a trail.....you're asking for trouble. You have to go check it (more scent). You're leaving scent where it shouldn't be (where you expect to see deer).....and taking a chance that your flash "might" spook them (or a particular deer). So I'm wondering if they are avoiding the camera flash.....or the constant scent left there by checking the cams???? Introduce a pleasant stimulus (food - minerals) and I'm betting they'll tolerate more than they would on a trail. I'd sure never know if they avoided them on a trail, or not.;) It is illegal (in my areas)to introduce a pleasant stimulas (food - minerals), it's called feeding/baiting and is punishable with a nice fine. |

Did you ever look for his sheds or anything? I can't belive he was just cruizing around your neighborhood! Do you live next to some farm land or was he just hanging out in a little chunk of timber? |

ORIGINAL: GregH It is illegal (in my areas)to introduce a pleasant stimulas (food - minerals), it's called feeding/baiting and is punishable with a nice fine. HOWEVER, we have never gotten a picture of a 4.5+ year old buck. All the pics I have gotten of older bucks were when I had the cameras on funnels, trails, etc. They just won't come into an area that has human scent (that is my theory anyway). Doesn't matter if there is food b/c there is so much of it around here. At least around here, and I would guess anywhere that has plenty of food, baiting is not effective for taking older bucks. They just won't use it. Kind of off subject, but at least it is related.;) |
RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
Come to think of it, i only got pictures of this stud one time...
This is the buck that i passed up at 12 yards in December becasue i didnt have camera light. I figured i would get another crack at him over the next few evenings. The next night i had him feeding out in the field 50 yards away through some brush and unfortunately a poacher ruined it all for me. This field isnt too far off the road, and i had a guy drive by spotlighting. I was afraid he was going to shoot the deer so i yelled at the top of my lungs. Of course they both (the poacher and the deer) took off out of there as fast as they could. This buck is a VERY mature deer and actually traveled several miles with a doe to get to where i was hunting him from where he was in the summer. I only got these couple pictures of him after the season before i think he returned to the area where he came from because i never found his sheds after looking very hard for them....I can only hope that he bred that doe he was chasing! Look at his big, thick legs. ![]() ![]() Greg, this also goes along with what you were saying about the older 6.5+ deer breeding later in the year durring the second rut. This was actually in mid December when i started seeing this buck i believe... |

RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
I remember you making a thread about this buck and not having enough light for the camera and not shooting him. I never did see a pic though until now, what a stud of a buck!!!! I would of had a hard time not shooting this big guy because of low light for the camera but I guess I don't film hunts and make video's like you do so you gotta do what you gotta do. Hope something works out this year with this brute Micheal!! Thanks for sharing the pic.

RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
I haven't read them all but it's the same old argument/discussion.
Some deer do, some deer don't is a simple way to say it. They are as individual as you and I. Here's one example. A friend of mine got ONE picture of a mature buck in a food plot. They wondered if he was still there so they left the camera in place. (On a post/fence in the middle of the plot) They put a Wildlife Eye pointing toward the camera. Sure enough, that buck was still there and he'd walk across the food plot, stop and go around the camera. They said it was quite evident that this particular buck wanted to avoid it. I've got pictures of bucks turning inside out to flee the camera. (35mm so I'm not sure if it was flash or noise) I have others which stand there and seem to pose. Most times though, we hear that people get ONE picture of a certain buck and never again UNLESS the camera is moved. Obviously the intrusion has to be part of the equation. |

So How long until we condition deer to game camera's? I know deer in Northen MI are conidiion to know bait is trouble, and they are also condition to look up[&:] How long before game camera's become a "no no" For example in over 20+ years of baiting in NLP, out of 7 hunters we have seen exactly 1 mature buck come eat. That was in Dec and my uncle could not get a shot off. He kept one eye on the bait and one eye on him[8D] My neighbor is putting camera's out, I see them along the river, it makes me happy[8D] |

RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
This is one of the oldest bucks I have ever gotten pictures of. I never did get to see him in the daylight. I truely believe there are only a few days a year during the rut that you will catch that age class of deer on their feetduring daylight. MOST of them will be very nocturnal, pressured or not. I did however get pictures of him over and over in the very same spots and often he was looking at the camera. That particular mature deer did not seem to be camer shy in the least. As I have mentioned in the past, this deer was found by a friend early in the spring hooked up with another nice deer. Both were 150's class bucks. I had muchhigher scoringdeer to hunt but would have gladly put a tag on this old warrior, even if it was my only tag.

I could just see that buck staring at the camera with an eyebrow cocked.:D |
RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
He was a pig, I mentioned before, but my only rule for the friends that I let hunt was that we had to put that deer on a scale before field dressing. I was so curious to see what he would weigh. I always felt like he would top the 300# mark. Maybe, he was too short in the body to make that weight but big none the less.
HuntingBry, both of his ear tips had been frozen off so they were very short and round. For that reason I always called this deer 'Bear'. |

Here is a better angle to show his goofy ears.

That is one big bad ass tough buck. He would make a crazy mount with those ears. |

If not 300lbs, he'd be damn close!;)

That is one Toad of a Buck !!
|
RE: Mature Bucks - Nocturnal...Camera Shy....
This is the only mature buck that I have gotten on Camera. He was 4.5 in the picture. I have no idea if he is still around or not. I did not see him at all last year, but I saw him twice the year before. He is on his way down this year if so. BTW notice where he is looking ;)
