One season, any weapon

Are there ANY states where hunting season is one long season with no weapons restrictions? Gun, bow, ML, X-Bows all legal, all season long?

Do you think this is a good idea & way to operate the hunting seasons, or do you think it would be total chaos?

Do you think its the dumbest idea in the world?

I "think" it's that way in SC.

They have a lot of deer....and not so many (relatively) hunters. Seems to work, for them.

Up here in my area of Ontario the season(s) run like this....2008.....

Bow season opens September 20
ML season opens October 4
Rifle season opens October 11
They all close on November 15 for non-residents and December 15 for residents.

Non-Residents get one tag for buck only.

I believe it sucks. It wasn't bad until the last few years when every Tom Dick and Harry started coming form out east and shooting about any buck that moves near the road.

What also sucks is that once ML season opens I have to wear orange, even when bow hunting.

I think it is a horrible idea for most areas in the United States.

I know you "must" have been talking about how it might be in your state (could be wrong). But can you say it is bad for the state doing it? It's the way it is for a reason.

It is not like that here andI am thankful for that.

Gotcha. I don't want it that way in NC, either.....and that's just being selfish RE: the quality of hunting we still have (everything's relative, right?).

But it's that way for a reason in SC.;)

Guns with foliage on the trees stillin my mind is a bad idea....

Our bowhunter's do a great job of killing deer before gun season.... After the rut hits our first gun season and they take a large share of deer... That is followed bythe second gun season... Thenthe latemuzzleloader season... Late archery wraps our season up....

Our setup here is rather effective.

Based on those comments.....I put a lot of stock in the "our" and "here" words in your reply. SC obviously has either more deer and/or less hunters. If they were doing an effective job of taking them with bows.....they probably wouldn't open their season to all weapons on August 15th.

Except for a few weeks in October, our little bow season, and a few counties that have special late muzzleloader seasons, that's the way it is here in Texas year round (No closed season on hogs and exotics). Dance with what ya brung.;) I am practically convinced our bow season will eventually be incorporated into the general season. It'd certainly leave only dedicated bowhunters in the woods.

Yea, but now take that season and make it the ONLY season. That is my point.

Note to self: NEVER attempt to hunt in SC. ;)

Actually...not all of the zones open on Aug. 15th, 3 of game zones here in SC do. The other half of the zones open between Sept. 1-14. Except for zone1 which doesn't open until Oct. 1st. "Bow" season usually runs about 2 weeks in all the zones prior to gun season opening.

RE: One season, any weapon

And the last time I checked, SC had the highest deer per square mile ratio in the nation. Not to say that hasn't changed since.

And in these zones (Aug. 15th)....doesn't it open for ANY weapon?

"Bow" season usually runs about 2 weeks in all the zones prior to gun season opening.

What about the ones that open Aug. 15th? Do they have a bow-only season?

What areas are NOT open Aug. 15th to ANY weapon? What areas of the state? This is news, to me.....but I don't live there, anymore. Thanks for setting the record straight.

2 of the 3 zones that open on Aug. 15th are any weapon until Jan. 1. The other zone is bow only from Aug 15-Aug 31st.

Zones 1, 2, and 4 do not open on Aug. 15th. Zones 1 and 2 are basically the "upstate" area and zone 4 is the greater Florence area. Here's the link...

Thanks, nc....

Being from Charleston....that's the only deer season I knew, down there (through friends). If it didn't fly or swim....I didn't pursue it.

RE: One season, any weapon

It's definitely a round about, ass-backwards way of doing things and the number of bucks we can kill is WAY to high. Hopefully that will change. Right now, we can kill 5 bucks! That's ridiculous. We still have "doe days." Granted we can purchase doe tags for $5 and shoot them on non-doe days. Some things need to change!

RE: One season, any weapon

I couldn't even imagine PA being an all weapons season from October 1-January 31. One thing is for sure I probably would never have found my love for bowhunting if it were that way and I probably wouldn't still be hunting. That would be a nightmare. You wouldn't be able to walk off the road without walking over spent shells for the first 150 yards into the woods.

I think if that happened deer in PA would have evolved into tree climbers and taken flight.
