I know this sounds weird but if you have a restroom down there (could not tell from pics and posts) I would add a Urinal. A couple buddies of mine have built their own man caves and every guy smiles and comments about the urinal idea. Ifno restroom thenI agree on the recessed lighting for the mounts, actually I agree anyways. You can do a lot of neat things with having an open ceiling above that grid.

1. Take flag down.
2. Place it at entrance on floor.
3. Wipe feet prior to entering man cave
J/K all in fun!
Looks cool, I'm a fan of any place in the house you can go to without hearing something about what so and so did. Or what "our" plans are for the wknd. Or what neeeds to be fixed. Or what appliance "WE" cant live without etc.

I would go either with the rustic look. Like carsiding or log siding. Or I would dry wall with wainscoating. Being a new home owner I guess money is a little tight so the drywall and wainscoating would be the less expensive way to go.
Put the flag in the Bathroom it might work as TP

First thing I would recommend to make a quick easy and drastic improvement over the entire room............is to pull down that hideous flag and replace with one of these.

A+ on the can lighting idea.If your goin to frame and drywall it I would recomend getting a LCD flat screen and setting it back in the wall. Basically build it into the wall. easier to hide wires. Then I would go with either a barnwood paneling or interior log siding. some camo furniture and some rustic coffee and end tables.
