RE: Are you detail oriented: speed, KE, grains...?

Yes & no. I know these things only because it seems like the cool thing to do and I have all the toys available to do so. But honestly I don't care. The numbers come out what they may, I just record all them for entertainment puroses.

But sometimes it is fun to play and see what changes do what, but I don;t get hung up trying to reach a specific number.

Here's a good example of why it's important to know these things:

Lets say I'm interested in shooting 60#'s this fall....but I still want to shoot a mechanical BH.

Ya think it matters to know my KE? How would I decipher what that might be?

Yes....in some situations it IS important to know. If I were shooting 70#'s out of the 82nd....the point (RE: KE) would be moot.

RE: Are you detail oriented: speed, KE, grains...?

Im normally not very detailed as far as speed and KE. I have usedsetups with MUCHLESS over the years and they worked just fine granted the shots were good ones. I have killed plenty of deer and know what works for me. BUT, at the recent G2G, MECHDOC brung his crono, grain scale, poundage scale and we played with it a bit. I had no idea what my bow was shooting but i know now. I had two sets of arrows so i tested both and was surprised at the difference in speed with the different grain weights. I have the weights wrote down but here is what im thinking they were. With my victory arrows at 354 grains and bow maxed out i was shooting 301 fps. with my other arrows weighing in at 401 grains i was shooting 274 fps. Ill most likely go the heavier arrows for deer hunting. I can see myself buying some more toys :D

My hunting buddy MECHDOC has a mini pro shop in his garage. I stopped by his place to chrono and tinker with my setup for the season. I know what a 403gr setup will do and what f.o.c. I have and what a 428gr setup will do. My bow pulls at 82.2# currently and I have no problem shooting broadheads as accurately as my fieldpoints. Now if he would get a decible meter I'd be totally dialed in;)
Yeah, I'm that way. I actually do have a decibel meter that I use. I'm only this way with my hobbies for some reason.
Dang it. In addition to the chrono and grain scale, I have an arrow saw, bow scale, press, fletching jig, but not a decibel meter.
You can actually get one at Radio Shack for around $40. The problem is you have to have a room or find a quite place outside (no wind, birds, etc.) that will give you consistent readings. You also have to isolate the sound of the arrow hitting the target because sometimes it is louder than the bow. There are a lot of variables that go into getting a good reading. I actually have it because of work. I didn't buy it because of archery and don't know that I would recommend it. You can tell more with your ear than you can with the meter anyhow.

I am interested, but it very easy for me to go overboard. When that happens, my shooting suffers, because each shot is trying to answer a question other than, "Can I hit that spot?" I would say I'm much more particular about tuning than speed. My faster bow produces 70 ft# of KE, the "slow" one produces 63. Either will do the job. Both are tuned to shoot broadheads straight and true. I would be better off spending more time on the setup of my hunting areas and stands than worrying too much about the bow.;)

The bottom line for me is putting my arrow where it belongs. I shoot fixed blade broadheads, so as long as i can put em'where i want em', the rest doesn't concern me.

At times I go even further. I'm my own full blown pro shop (and for friends) and I love to tinker with my bows/equipment.
And we appreciate it too! Atleast I know I do!;)

just starting to get into it now. just bought a grain scale. I was amazed at the gtg, when several of us did some comparison shooting w/a chrono. I was surprised as how an arrow 40 grains less, flew 40 fps faster. Also found that my 100 gr. field tips were actually a little over, 108. 104 etc. my muzzys all on @ 100gr. Just another step for obsessomg.

RE: Are you detail oriented: speed, KE, grains...?

After I get my bow all tuned up the first thing I do is break out my chrony and see what my arrow is doing. I am not truly worried about the speed though, I do it for the following reasons.....

1.) Knowing my KE allows me to examine the different types of broadheads to use. I am a fixed blade fan but I like knowing that I have 78 # of KE and that if I want to use a mechanical with a 2 3/4"cut I will have plenty of oomph behind my arrow.

2.) I personally won't hunt with a bow below 280 fps. With a 406 grain arrow my bow is shooting @ 295 fps. Knowing this tells me that I have about 45 grains to spare before I hit the 280 fps mark so I can tinker and toy and see how different weight arrows tune with my set up, see where my FOC goes, where my KE & momentum goes, etc.

If an arrow weighing 40 grains less flew 40 fps faster then there were several different factors at play because a reduction of 40 grains will only yield you about 8-14 fps depending on the bow.
