Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Just curious to know what most consider to be the biggest gimmick or the least used item that they have purchased through the years of hunting and on the flip side what you consider to be one of your best hunting purchases (don't forget the little things that help out) other than your bow.
I am very young to the sport of bow hunting but not to rifle. My best purchase was a Marlin .22 when I was about twelve instead of a nintendo. Ammo was cheap and I had plenty of farmers and ranchers in the area willing to let me hunt prairie dogs every day after school if I wanted to. I drove around a red and white 72 chevy for many years killing dogs like the plague, and now all those areas I use to hunt are covered by homes. I would have to say my worst purchases are in general the ones where I try to save money, I firmly believe in you get what you pay for and have been reminded of that through the years. Now days that is more true then ever and it seems if you are willing to pay a little more you end up getting American made to!!! |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Worst---C'Mere Deer or BuckGel attractants.

RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
WORST; Cover scent (if they can smell that, they can smell you) and cheap accessories. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
BEST; Nikon binos and Summit Viper. |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Not sure if it was a gimmick or if I just fell prey to good marketing. I purchased a Summit Python the year they were intorduced. This stand had a combination footrest/shooting rail dependent on how you positioned it. I never could get the stand to pack correctly and it became a cumbersom mess transporting it in an out of the woods. I passed the stand onto a close friend when he began archery hunting. Replaced it with the new designed Loggy bayou stand.
Best purchase to date, Hunter safety system harness. Also purchased when it came out and may be looking to upgrade to the lighter mess model. I can't believe the Deer view mirror hasn't been mentioned yet. |

The biggest gimmick imo was the heat seeking game finder. If it did work every bow hunter in the world would own one.
The best would be my thermacell. |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
WORST: Buck growl and dream season boots
BEST: Bushnell Binos, polecat bipod, and the can call |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Best - My EZ kut (http://www.woodyhunting.com/Package-Offers.html) for $40 at a trade show.....I thought it wouldn't last me more than 2 trees of drilling. Works great for hunting on public land where you gotta carry your ladders in and out constantly when hunting a non-climber spot.
Worst- I wish I knew the name of it...a $4 grunt call. You get what you pay for...froze up every time the weather dipped below 32...replaced it with a primos buck grunt, I'm looking forward to trying the new one out. |

Best: Lone Wolf climber/ Hoyt Vectrix/ Primos "Can";)
Worst: Tinks 69....What a joke![:'(] |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
OK...
Best: Would have to have come in Sitka Gear...more ways to enjoy the outdoors in ALL climates. But the release by far has to be the best in increasing accuracy. Worst : I would have to say the worst archery gadget would of had to be the Trackmaster...it went against the whole pass thru thing. Turkey : Anyone still carry the Dead Silence ?? |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Best; I'll second the Thermacell... all the way.... along with a Surefire Flashlight and a good pair of binos (I have the top model Bushnell made at the time... now they are like middle of the road bushnells... but still a big improvement over $100 glass). I invest in several good books every year that keep me entertained in the stand and keep me sitting still and in place.
Worst; Deer calls (except for the can calls... they work).... deer scents.... cover scents.... scent-lok..... |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
best: my scent blocker dream season suit.
Worst: Lumeknoks--they worked for maybe one shot and then never worked again not worth the 9.99 for on it is bull... |

RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
wasent there some kinda tracking line that tied onto your arrow and when you shot you just followed the string? That was a real bright idea (sarcasim) Overdraws, bodoodles, and those things that replace fletching and pop off when the arrow goes through the deer.
Best- Rage broadheads, and the hostage pro rest, The can |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Best: quality gore tex clothing.. Keeps me dry and the wind never bothers me.
Worst: cheap huntingclothing. |

RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Worst where do I start but mostly Scent Lock clothing,Tinks 69
Best range finder, scott release safety harness |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
The scent lock being in both best and worst did not suprise me but the can calls as the most consistent best listing did. I might have to get on of those things.

RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Worst: Buck Growl- Never worked for me at all!
Best: Lone Wolf Climber-Awesome, Nikon Binoc's-Excellent **Honestly, I can't believe the desparity in the Scent-Lok garments on this thread. Are people just hating because they can't afford it? Or do so many of you have no care for scent lock clothing at all? I'm really interested in this!! Seems pretty well split thus far, but a lot have listed it as the "worst" gimmick. Wow! |
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
I think a lot of people just don't believe that the stuff works, I am still on the fence and if it does not work then I think it just might be the biggest gimmick of all time even if only in terms of spent dollars on it.
|
RE: Biggest gimmick purchase through the years
Worst: Carbon based scent reduction clothing, total rip off and I'm ashamed to havebeen suckered byit. Best: Indiana Comprehensive Lifetime Hunting License, best $855 I ever spent, period. |
