You are correct journeyman, I had forgot about public ground. What I meant was that there is not a statewide requirement. I have never hunted the public grounds, they are all too far away from me. Matador is about 50 miles, but when you can hunt private ground 10 miles from home...
I cannot ever remember having to check in deer that were killed on private ground, though it may have been a requirement at some point. Do you have any knowledge of this? |

We still have check stations here in MA.

We have them at the WMAs but not for private land.

Telecheck for a while here in KY. I like it. Never understood how it facilitates poaching. Poachers are just that, poachers. They are breaking the law to illegally kill a deer. It doesn't matter if they have to check it in, call it in, or show the town mayor, they wont do it because the deer is illegal. Poaching has more to do with the person doing it rather than how one could check in a legally killed deer.
Check stations only apply to legal deer. I like the telecheck system. There are still basically check stations though. Local gas stations and bow shops are where anyone who kills a decent deer takes it in, shows it off, gets a pic taken, and just hangs out. Pretty awesome sight opening day of rifle season. |

Indiana still has the check in stations. I hope it stays that way, its just good atmosphere being around other hunters when they are checking in there deer/turkeys. I like to go to my local FWA check in station, the bioligist age check the deer via jawbone.

We still have them in WV and Iam happywe still havethem. It gives you an idea of what everyone is killing and I guess I am old fashioned because I like the stories and the conversation....:).
It's also a big revenue river for the small mom and pop stores in rural WV when all of the hunters stop in to check there derr, they usually by something too........... I would hate the telecheck system if it were implemented in WV. |

Mott, I have the same expirience at the gas station check in. However up until last year we didn't have the gas station available to check deer in. The only place we could do it was the commision office and they are 9-5 and no weekends. It was the biggest PITA to work with. I always just called the local G&F officer and he was nice enough to check it in for me at his house.

ok...WV does have check in stations...but I would like to goto online style. I check in every deer I take. I can't remember the last time the clerk walked out and really checked for a deer. I checked deer in three different places, two of which are in different counties...none came out to the truck to see what I had. I like modern technology. People who brake laws will do it reguardless of how you check them in. I process most of my deer on site of the farms I hunt. I personally feel it's a waste of time to have to physically take a deer head to the local check station. I maybe alone in those beliefs...I think it could improve the the true number of deer harvested. Some people are too lazy to have to full with checking a deer in. Just think of all the land owners that don't. I personally believe the true deer harvast numbers each year for wv is off at least 10,000 or more do to this.

The lack of DNR officials and the poaching culture here makes it too easy.The enforcement of the laws actually need to be increased in WV IMO. |
