RE: Off subject-PLEASE WEAR HELMETS YOU MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
ORIGINAL: brucelanthier Perhaps it shouldn't be a law and seatbelts shouldn't either but then you should not be able to sue or collect government aid due to injuries incurred because you chose not wear either one. No one wants the government breathing down their neck but no one seems to want to take responsibility for the results of thier bad decisions either. Best wishes to your sister. I hope your sister recovers fully and quickly. Bruce, great post and I agree 100% Not wearing a helmet is quite possibly the most idiotic thing to do. No I don't think there should be helmet laws......but I think yourbeing foolish if you don't wear one...... |
RE: Off subject-PLEASE WEAR HELMETS YOU MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
ORIGINAL: huntingson Full face helmets are supposed to be the safest, yet they reduce your peripheral vision which is rather important. Also, try riding at highway speeds by/around/near a semi with the amazing amount of turbulent air coming off of it. You head actually starts waving around uncontrollably, which in turn can throw you off balance. Perhaps you have had an experience with a cheap poorly designed/constructed helmet? My advise (take if for what it's worth) look to see what the circuit riders are wearing (moto gp, superbike, etc..) and get one of those....Stay away from the cheaper low cost modelhelmets. Get the top of the line ones the pro riders wearand you will discover just how good a well constructed helmet is. P.S. Being thrown off balance due to turbulence has more to do with the motorcycle geometrics than the rider. A steady well designedbike will absorb more "rider abnormalities" and continue to track straight. |

I prefer the full face helmets over the half helmets for the same reason. They are more stable at speed.
Not that I ever go fast ![]() or ride wheelies ![]() or go fast:D ![]() |

RE: Off subject-PLEASE WEAR HELMETS YOU MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
Best wishes for a full recovery for you sister.
Helmets give better protection than not wearing one at all but thier not a cure all for protection. My co-worker was killed last year by a person blowing a stop sign. He was wearing a full helmet. His brain swelled up so bad and so fast the paramedics could not get it off of him at the sceen. He was however pronounced dead at the sceen. The helmet had to be cut off. I live in a state where helmets are not required but they have to be on the motorcycle. I guess that's because all the surrounding States have helmet laws. I wear mine more than I used to, probably 75% of the time. Again I wish a full recovery for your sister. |

Also, if you ride a motorcyle make damn sure your insurance protects you against uninsured motorists and underinsured motorists. They say as many as 20% of all drivers on the road are uninsured, and in urban areas its much higher. With todays economy, that number is probably growing every day.
My dad is going to lose his job, his leg, and probably his house from his motorcycle accident last March. Since the worthless POS crackhead who hit him had NO INSURANCE or assets to sue for, and his motorcycle insurance didn't protect him against uninsured drivers, he's S-O-L. Nothing but Social Security disability for him for the rest of his life. But, his helmet saved his life. Just like it did the other two crashes he had. I'm not some whiny liberal democrat who wants the goverment to make every decision for me. HOWEVER, I'm glad Michigan has a helmet law because its saved my dad's life three times now. No way would he wear a helmet if it wasn't required by law. That's one law I'm grateful for. Without that lawI would have lost my Dad when I was 7 years old - the first time he crashed. |
