What's going through your mind just as you here the leaves crunching.... and you know it's close... is it a squirrel? No too carefull to be a squirrel.... Here it is, as soon as it takes 5 more steps....

Stay Calm, Pick A Spot...........draw..place the pin...release.......deflate like a baloon... :DThat's pretty much how it goes:D:D:) |

Is it a doe or a buck. Hunting where I hunt....and having the liberal doe limits......AND...having somewhere for the meat to always go......I'm thinking ......JUST RELAX.
Just present a shot. I've learned to relax and look around a little. When I hear one.....that usually means there's more. I try to make sure I don't get too quick and get busted by a deer I didn't see/hear, initially. |

My first reaction is reaching full draw unnoticed....my second reaction is painting a picture on a hair behind the shoulder...and having a vision of my arrow in flight...!!
And then a nice Omolette at the peppermill restaurant in badaxe atabout 10AM:) |

Here's what goes through my mind...
Oh that sounds like a deer, it's definately a deer, let me just take a peek and then get ready. I crane around the tree to find the deer and it's a squirrel. [&:] More than once, I've sat there and said, that's definately a squirrel. I'm not going to waste any movment, and just sit still. I finally take a look in the direction, and what do you know, it's a deer, now closer than I'd like :D. That's how things go for me. [8D] |

first reaction is......well my heart starts pounding and then i think of how i can look at the animal (whatever it may be)without it seeing me

Listen for weight..... Can I get an eye on it without spooking everything, my foots asleep.... There might be 2????
Do I have an opening to draw? wait for the head to give you the ok.... Draw... Focus before the sight, any branches I can't see, I'm thinking too much..... Just feel the shot, put myarrowthererightnow............. |

Focus on not being seen. Move at the speed that is necessary to grab my bow, stand, draw, and prepare for a shot within seconds or minutes if necessary. I really focus on not being seen and with that my confidence grows on my shot.

I'll tell you what. I was sitting in my stand last year and was hearing squirrels, one after another, stirring up the leaves. It got to the point where I stopped looking. I hearsome stirring again, only this time it's quite close. So, for the hell of it I turn my head (too quickly) expecting it to be another another squirrel. It's not!!! It's thebest buck, a 10pt, I've ever seen in my hunting area,ever.[:@] Hesaw me turn to look, and he breaks camp like it was nobody's business!! This buck was literally 10yrds from me. I'll never forget that day.:D Then I start looking for my release, only to later find it in the truck. |

Stay completely still and try to find it without moving my head. If I still can't see it, move my head so ever so slowly so I can't be detected making the ID.

It won't happen again. Lesson learned.;):D |

I have to slow my breathing down........wonder if he can hear my heart beating? Get my bow in hand and my release on the string and wait until his head is behind a tree to draw/stand. Draw. Focus on the kill zone based on how he is standing and................ release............thwack!:D |

That was definately a learning experience for me last season being my first. Those squirrels and chip munks were constantly driving me up the tree. I'm just going to have to be patient but find a new spot.

There are those sounds that are all squirrel. The sounds that really could be either if a deer is meandering. And then the sounds that are all deer.
There are a lot of squirrels where I hunt these days and therefore the constant filter of those sounds. Once I see a buck like most of you I’m not so much thinking as reacting on autopilot. It seems like I’ve spent a lifetime of hours on stand waiting for those moments. |
