That's the part that's interesting/surprising, to me.....given all the "mature" buck/QDM hunters we have in the forum.

Come on Jeff, this is the Internet. The land where everyone has an IQ of 180, makes over $100,000 a year, has a super hot wife and/or girlfriend, a big house, drives a brand new truck, and holds out for a "mature" buck that they've been "patterning" all season long.
Life is good on the Internet my friends!

In my case, that couldn't be more true Jeff, and I'll admit that. For ME, as far as killing a buck, it's all about antler size. Not that I've killed a lot of big bucks either, because I haven't.I'm just as happy to kill a doe instead of killing the first legal/half rackedbuck that is unfortunate enough to walk by my stand. And this comes from someone who hunts public land most of the time. Just me though.

The age of a buck is pure speculation. They don't file papers at the court house or with S.S. administration,it is a qualified guess at best. This is where better feed year round, added minerals and population control come to play. Not all bucks will grow to B.C. proportions but with age and diet most will reach P.Y. minimums.
Age is just the one controlling factor that huntersdo have a say about. You will never shoot big bucks if you are content to shoot small bucks.
Now go back and read how many PA guys admit they will kill it because if "they don't the next guy will".In this state the first words you hear are "did you get your buck"? No one really cares how old he is.[:-]

I guess it's safe to assume that the guys who wouldn't shoot the half-rack value the inches of antler (when determining the "trophy" status of a whitetail buck) over the age of said animal?

My IQ is only 132, thatputs me between Bush #43 and Clinton which I am not happy about, but glad I did not spend the money on a Harvard, or Yale education.
My wife had the nicestAzz in highschool, now she has 2 of them, but a great personality and she puts up with me.
My hunting/fishing mobile is a 94 Blazer.
I hold out for a good buck with a full rack, that I may or may not have been patterning all year.

RE: Would you shoot a half rack?
I could care less how old a Buck is. If a 2 1/2 year old is sporting a 150-160 inch rack there is no way I'm passing him up until he is so calledmature.
Besides maybe I looked at his Birthday wrong[8D]
